Not sure if this is the correct place for this but here we go.
I am wanting to set up a plex media server but am still looking at the options.
Ideally, I would like to buy a mini pc with a decent processor, maybe an i7-1165G7, to handle the transcoding and a nas drive for storage, somewhere in the range of Synology DS723+ or DS224+.
My question is will this work well?
I predominantly see on the web people using one or the other but not so much a combination of both.
Will having the files on the network slow down or hinder the transcoding or the playing of media in anyway?
Also if I decided to get an even cheaper nas for storage would that be ok as long as the Plex server sits on the mini pc?
I am using an i7-NUC for that exact purpose. My files are coming from a TrueNAS system I built myself but any NAS you want to use is fine. Just set up your shares so you can access with SAMBA and mount them on the Linux system on startup.
Just make sure your IGPU will handle HW transcoding and do not use Ubuntu 24.04 yet. (there is a running thread here about the latest Intel drivers not playing nice yet)
In-so-far-as network bottlenecks, if you are using a 1G wired network or a WiFi-5 wireless network with good coverage, you shouldn’t have any issues.
I was able to get my Ubuntu transcoder system setup in 1 evening and I consider myself a Linux noob.
