Nested Collections

For the people in here (eg: jp.briggs, chubbycheese + ravero’s posts) encountering the display issues with movies that are in multiple collections (such as having both a Marvel collection and an Iron Man collection, or Pixar and Toy Story), there’s already an active feature request on this (very frustrating!) issue:

It’s not a full feature request but there seems to be some issue with current per collection viewing rule for current implementation. For example, The Return of the King is part of Lord of the Rings collection as well as Oscar Best Picture collection in my case. I’d rather hide individual items for Lord of the Rings collection. But I don’t want to do the same for movies on Oscar Best Picture collection for obvious reasons. This creates two conflicting collection rules, resulting Return of the…

There’s a great summary of this issue using the MCU example in that thread, but the heart of the issue is about how hide items should take priority over show items for items that are in multiple collections. (Or to implement an advanced library setting to toggle this behavior, or implement more granular control or even hierarchical display rules)

I don’t mean to take away any merit from the nested collections suggestion, it definitely has its valid use cases and I’m sure I’d use the feature! I only bring this up as I believe these are separate issues. For example, personally I’d like both my Marvel and Iron Man collections to be visible in the library view, and not nested.
