There is already the functionality to create “collections”. When in the media manager you can right click on a film and say add to collection…
I have done this with all the saw movies and it works great! To view a collection such as the saw movies, when you first enter into the movie category, you will see an option like collections, and under there it will list any collections you have made.
Yeah but if you go into all movies, you see all your movies and the collections are splitted, I would love to have all my videos in one place, without choosing collection or not.
I hope this makes it for the upcoming release. While I love the more technical stuff they’re doing, I think the way to stand out on the Mac platform is by adding this kind of functionality, not adding better streaming (as much as I love that!). Personally, I would prefer a feature stop on all those technical things if the GUI and usability would be improved (because that’s something that irritates me every time I use Plex, while streaming is something I don’t do that often)
Essentially, you’re adding one level of hierarchy to the movies list. So rather than use a dedicated view like “Collections” (which would only show those movies in collections, and not all the non-collected movies), you’d like to open the “All Movies” view and see collections there represented by a single poster for each collection, which when selected shows the movies in that collection.
Personally, I think it’s a fantastic idea. It’s an immediately obvious mental model, and it doesn’t disrupt anyone’s usage patterns. For those of us who want it all in one list, we don’t have to change anything. For those who want to see their movies organized with certain series collapsed, this would do the job nicely.
Agree with this. Nice idea and this came to my mind when I put all the pink panther stuff in one collection. As I then discovered in the movies section there still were all the individual entries which I found disturbing and counter-intuitive. Would love to see this.
I agree entirely. It seems like such an obvious feature to me. I hate sifting through Bond, Die Hard, Friday the 13th, Aliens, Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play, etc, etc... It'd make finding something to watch much faster.
Would love this. It would come in handy for us that have multiple cuts of the same film! I’ve got 4 different cuts of Dawn of The Dead… Overkill I know
Ideally there would be an option in the main Library that would be a checkbox like this “show collections in main movie list (this will hide any movie in a collection)”. That way it is optional and the user knows that a movie will not show up in the list if it is in a collection.
There was a similar request made in a separate thread and one of the solutions offered there works really well for me. I was having an issue with sorting of the Indiana Jones and Harry Potters series and it was suggested that you can edit the metadata “Sort Title” field. This allows you to keep the original title, but sort it any way you want (I chose chronologically).
So, for instance “Raiders of the Lost Arc” was sorted with the R’s since it didn’t really start with “Indiana Jones and the”. I went in and edited the metadata and set the Sort Title to “Indiana Jones 1” and set the Sort Title for “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” to “Indiana Jones 2”, etc.
