Nested Collections

I too would love this feature to be added. I only just got round to adding my movies into collections this week (after using Plex for a number of years) and presumed there would be an option to set this up already.

Movies look all neat and tidy until I go in to my collections and it’s carnage in there!!

Please, please implement this feature…please?!

Adding onto the pile of people who would love this feature!

It’s been 2 years since I put this feature request in. It’d be awfully nice if a Plex employee would at least acknowledge the request. Even better would be to have a publicly viewable roadmap of features.

Totally agree here. I think from a design/UI (and even database) perspective, this could get very complicated very quickly.

But I think most people would agree by adding the ability to use the same ‘collection tag’ on a collection, this would be sufficient. This would mean when editing the collection, the ‘Tags’ item appears in the menu, and you can then add a collection tag to the collection.

Not to bang on about the benefit, but this means you can tag a movie as Tim Burton’s Batman, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman, and tag both ‘collections’ (not movies) as Batman, when browsing Batman, you have a nested list of the collections, and their members.

Would be brilliant to see!

I’d really love this feature it’s a shame Plex seem to be ignoring this whole thread for the past 2 years. Just tried to sort my TV library out a bit and the buggy collections just made it worse.

Adding my vote to this. For me the ability to make a collection part of a collection would be great, basically hierarchical collections just like folders on a PC.

Also adding a vote here, this would be super useful

Adding another vote to those already here! This is what my plex movie library is crying out for! Please devs, see what you can do for us??

Yep.

Would be a very nice feature

Plex, Plex, are you there? Plex Pas (paying customers) obviously want this feature, as do I. What’s the status, what are you going to do about it?

I understand you want this feature… so do almost 100 other users.
Personally I’ve spend my votes on some other collection improvement suggestions – but that doesn’t really matter here

Just as a reminder… the link to the “About the Feature Suggestion” information page. Considering Plex usually doesn’t comment on which of the suggestions they’re focusing or when a feature they opted to develop will be made available… let’s not kill the mood within this thread by soliciting a reaction

I’m on my first day of setting up a PLEX server and I was surprised to find nested collections are not possible. I would definitely like to see this implemented. Otherwise a really useful piece of software.

Just adding a use case for subgrouping within a collection. I’d like to look at all of the 93rd Academy Award nominees, but be able to separate them by the category. I could create separate collections for each award, but that doesn’t look nearly as aesthetically pleasing as having all of the categories on a single page. In order to what I’d like to do, there would need to a few capabilities available:

  1. Be able to group together individual movies underneath a defined category.
  2. Be able to name the group (or subcollection).
  3. Be able to order the subcollections under a collection manually.
  4. Allow a movie to exist within multiple subcollections.

Here’s an image of what I’m imagining:

Also adding my voice of support here. We’ve seen a lot of really great updates to collections lately, and this would be one of the “final blows” to making PLEX the ultimate ‘collection’ platform. Nested collections are needed very badly on mid to large size libraries.

Another thing I’d like to see is a fix to loading large collections on android lagging/freezing the client without fail.

I’d love to see this implemented, it would make libraries so much easier to navigate and sort. There is another feature request out there for facilitating multiple versions of the same movie (theatrical, directors, extended, special et al). I think that nesting collections could help with that too.

I’ll chime in here too…

Nested collections just seems like a no brainer as far as I’m concerned. The fact that the Plex devs hardly ever acknowledge or provide feedback only frustrates their paying customers even more.

Out of desperation, I stumbled on a solution that I think might help a lot of people tracking this thread.

My scenario.

I have a bunch of marvel movies, some in collections and some on their own.
if I edit the sharing tag for each of them and create a tag, lets say “Marvel Universe” as an example. Then create a smart collection where the label must match “Marvel Universe”, and that’s it… You now have a new smart collection called “Marvel Universe” and all other collections are left unaffected.

I’ve done this now for my Marvel, DC, Lord of the Rings, etc, etc… and so far is achieving the exact result I’m looking for.

I hope this helps out some of the frustrated users out there.

Yes, I discovered this a few days ago too. I’m not sure when this feature was introduced, but it’s strange there doesn’t appear to have been greater fanfare… It’s all there in the docs too

Just chiming in to voice my support for this feature. I see this mentioned everywhere as a major problem with Plex and not having it makes managing my collection a major pain.

I’m not quite sure how a request this popular could be so old without being implemented. And this doesn’t exactly seem like it would be the most complicated thing to implement.

Just add the ability for a collection to be tagged with another collection. And then have similar options for hiding collections that are already in collections.

I believe this would really help some people when they are trying to organize their library. I know it would really help me a lot.

I have a feeling Smart Collections are about as close to this Feature Request as ya’ll are ever going to get:

Smart Collections are in various stages of broken ATM, but if working correctly could do some very neat things…
