Nested Collections

I would like this to be added because Plex doesn’t seem interested in adding the Multiple Edition Feature people were asking for and have instead just given us a tag.

Therefore the only way to clean up libraries with multiple editions moving forward is to be able to nest collections within one another.

Hopefully it won’t take another 10 years to add this.

In case anyone cares, I also would really appreciate having this feature. For any serious music collector, it’s really not even an extra. It’s kind of essential.

You can already do this with smart collections. You need to add to the filter “AlbumCollection”, I believe. Have not used it yet, but I think that is what you are looking for.

If we’re lucky, it’ll be 10 years.

Maybe I missed earlier mention or request for this situation, but there are HUGE limitations with collections - especially when implemented at the movie detail page. The single dimension of Collections so far is major problem - cant begin to comprehend adding another dimension with nesting. I would love to have nesting too. Here’s my example: If you add more than one (1) Collection, very rarely will you see all of them on the movie details page, The first Collection will be displayed, maybe two collections (I’ve seen more in past but can’t reproduce), never more than two (2), then maybe 1 or 2 Actors movies. The next issues is the order of how metadata is entered in COLLECTION field. That order can grossly controls what is displayed. I since stopped adding extensive Collection metadata because it totally waste of effort until they increase the functionality of Collection. When Legend of Ten Rings came out and I found out (SPOILER ALERT-STOP READING IF YOU DONT KNOW TEN RINGS HISTORY) that Ten Rings was in Iron Man and Thor, I thought I was awesome to help other viewers see the relationships by COLLECTION on the TEN RINGS movie. So I entered in COLLECTIONS: Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), MCU-Infinity Saga, Legend of Ten Rings, MCU-Phase 1; Iron Man, Thor. Then later I wanted to update all Marvel Comics and DC Comics, so I did. Now, all I see for any Ten Rings collection is Marvel Comics (because it was the last entry to collections but first in order in Collection field). For a win and Thanks PLEX, they added functionality to have TV Shows & MOVIES that have matching Collections cross display on details page AND Collections are now searchable, Hooray.

This is definitely the feature that I want most out of Plex collections.

For instance, it would be excellent to have a parent collection for World Cinema, and then be able to break that down by country-based sub-collections.

Another example: a parent collection called “Filmmakers”, and then sub-collections for individual filmmakers.

Not to mention all of the other use cases that others have mentioned.

If collections are already possible to begin with, why can’t we nest them?

Nested Collections would be a literal godsend. I’d straight up pay $500 for some Plex employee to do this.

All I want is a place in Collections to be able to lump things together in a simplistic and clean manner… Like this:

Franchises

  • Lord of the Rings
  • Harry Potter
  • Fast & Furious

Trilogies

  • The Godfather
  • The Before Trilogy
  • Three Colors Trilogy

Studios

  • A24
  • SpectreVision
  • Warner Bros

So simple… but frustrating that it doesn’t exist.

I think this would be a big help, especially now that you can add individual TV show episodes to collections.

I would love to switch to Plex for Music streaming as soon as this is available since YT Music does not offer folders either. They are really needed and I don’t think that they are that hard to implement, even if we just get a light version.

Yes please! This would be exactly the solution to my one problem with Plex!!

This is my absolute #1 request for Plex features (I’d even go so far as to call this a “bug”).

Since there is no official solution yet for Editions, I’ve been adding the various Editions of movies to a Collection (and hiding the contents of that Collection in the main library), so that selecting a movie opens a new screen where you can choose which Edition to play.

Where this falls down is when I want to create a Collection for a movie franchise (all the “Blade Runner” movies/shorts/TV Series for example), which also contains one or more movies with multiple Editions.

I REALLY need the ability to create a Collection for the Editions within the Collection for the franchise. This is such a simple idea and having folders within folders on a PC has been an option since before there even were personal computers!

PLEASE give this top priority as this basically solves the “Editions” problem (for movies, at least) at the same time.

That information of yours is a bit outdated…

[edit: typo]

Yes, I’ve read all that but as far as I and, it seems, many others here are concerned that’s not a “solution”, at least not an effective solution.

I do not want multiple tiles for the same “split” movie Editions in my library page, it’s just too cluttered, but even more confusing is having Editions “merged” and having to scroll down the page even to discover that there are multiple Editions (if that ‘feature’ even works in the player app I happen to be watching at the time).

Besides all that, it’s off-topic for this thread!

Regardless of Editions, nested Collections is sorely needed, even if we’re limited to one or two layers in depth, although I don’t see why we should be.

As I stated earlier, personal computers have had the ability to have folders within folders since the dark ages (up until you reach a specific file-path length). I don’t know why Collections didn’t have this option right from their introduction.

OP is back. It’s been almost 5 years. I think it’s safe to assume this great, highly requested feature won’t be happening. I really wish there was some acknowledgment so we know that users/customers are being heard. Without that it’s like yelling into a void.

Well, let’s hope that my monthly subscription payment goes to a feature that I’ll be using.

Pfff come on plex!
At least give us a answer, you know common decency…

Plex haven’t commented in suggestion threads in the past, unless there were some clarifications needed. It appears they’re currently changing this approach (or working towards it).

As for this particular suggestion… they’re aware:

:point_up_2: :pikawave: :plexheart:

As for this one - no short term plans, but we have big goals for next year that will, if nothing else, make implementing requests like this much easier.

I’ve already said this in the past, but just to rehash a little…

I’d love the implementation of this to work similar to how we customise (and display) home hubs. I’d envision it giving us the ability to add multiple collections and organise them how we please, but the entry point would be like (or inside) the category section.

I’d even envision the option to customise the category images to override the automatically generated ones and even the option to hide them entirely.

I would love being able to devide my collections in groups. I’ve created a quick visual how this could look.

Would love to be able to do this. With any sizeable library collections get very messy and not very convenient.
Basically it could even work like the library does for TV shows, with a first level at the top which could be the group collection, than instead of seasons having different collections and movies as ‘episodes’. So it should be quite easy to implement.
