NETGEAR ReadyNAS RN428

I am considering purchasing the NETGEAR ReadyNAS RN428 and running Plex to share content among devices in my household. I reviewed the Plex NAS Compatibility chart, but I could not find details of whether the ReadyNAS RN428 supports Plex. Does anyone have insight into this product & compatibility?

yes, it has an intel x86/64 cpu.

with only 4 gig ram, you might consider adding another stick of ram or more.

Also you should understand that processor should be able handle a couple transcoding streams, it is not going to be doing much more than that, nor will it do any 4k transcoding.

4k direct play should not be any problem though.

so long as you don’t expect more performance than it can provide, it should make a nice plex server.

btw I have a 528x and it works great, given also the above conceits. I have 8x 8tb in raid6/x-raid dual redundancy.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Does the 528x support 4k transcoding, or does “given also the above conceits” mean that it is also not capable of this feature?

no, unfortunately there are no readynas devices which support 4k, which for best efficiency needs a gpu (either gpu in the cpu or external gpu card).

if you want a nas that can support 4k transcoding (which you should not be doing anyway), you will need to look at other brands. qnap/synology have various models that either accept a gpu card or have a cpu that has a gpu built in.

I can’t help you with those, though there are plenty of threads in those forum sections you should read if that is something you are interested in.

for 4k, see also this thread @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k - a FAQ which make help clarify the issues with 4k before you jump in that deep end of the pool.

At the bottom of this page, Plex keeps an updated spreadsheet of NAS’s they have capabilities tested.

I am the maintainer of the NAS Compatibility Guide.

I am also on the packaging team.

As easy first question, Have you tried it?

I have not tried it yet. I was curious about experiences before I purchased the NAS.

I went ahead and bought the device and it will be delivered tomorrow. I’ll be exploring this weekend and I’ll post my experiences here after getting setup.

Thanks for all the help–this was a very welcoming experience to the Plex community!

We do not have that NAS model family in our Lab else I would have reported it on the NAS Guide.
I will reach out and see what Netgear has to say about compatibility.

RN428, with the Atom C3000 CPU has been added to the NAS compatibility guide.
