Thanks for that explanation. The best one I’ve come across yet!
Well, i’ve seen a few reviews out there. Would be nice if someone would try playing TRUEHD through plex. However i guess the change would come through software, don’t know if the new apple tv is running a newer verison off TVOS? I also read some rumours regarding support for more audi codecs through TVOS 15? 14,5? i can’t keep track on all these software versions.
Anyone with new apple tv 2021 and plex yet ?
Well, doesn’t look good :/. That’s a shame. I used my shield 15 model this weekend, and boy that thing is sluggish. Not that long ago since i did a factory reset, only have a few apps. Spotify, kodi, plex, so nothing major
I can confirm still no pass through unfortunately. Have to say I’m a bit gutted about that but nvm
ATV is a media player second and a commercial device to consume Apple Content first, they have no motivation to configure the device to play personal media. I would not hold my breath for ATV passthrough to TrueHD etc.
Apple actually had passthrough on older models which was discountinued through a software update.
This is (unfortunately) my opinion as well. Such a pity!
I have the 2021 Apple TV 4K going to a Sonos Arc via an HDFury Arcana, but unfortunately still no luck with Atmos content.
When playing Dolby TrueHD Atmos content, Plex shows FLAC → FLAC audio transcoding and the sound eventually makes it to the Sonos as 7.1 LPCM, but with no Atmos. This is through the normal Plex app, I haven’t tried Infuse yet.
My understanding is that Infuse would transcode TrueHD to LPCM in-app rather than on the server. Have I understood that correctly, and would there be any advantage to doing it this way?
The Apple TVs cant output TrueHD Atmos, no matter what app you use.
Unless you had the most under-powered server ever, there shouldn’t be an advantage. And they’re both lossless, so that shouldn’t matter.
He he. I have the exact same setup. Shield for my Plex, ATV for wife Plex and everything else.
Are TrueHD Atmos and Dolby Atmos different?
I’m Trying to set up Plex on my Apple TV 4K and the DVDs that I have ripped the video and audio work fine. But the Blu-ray only has video, no audio. I have left these as the .mkv file from MakeMKV Beta software. When I play the file directly on my computer, which is my server, I have video and audio just fine.
I’ve tried messing with the “use old video player” in the Plex app on my Apple TV. Doesn’t help. Not sure what I’m doing wrong here.
Apple TV 4K (A1842 64GB)
tvOS 14.7 (18M60)
Plex Web v 4.59.2
Plex Server v 1.24.1.4931
UPDATE: I tried playing the film via the PLEX player already installed on my Tivo, no audio. Also tried playing within the Plex app on my computer, no audio. Attempting to re-rip the Blu-Ray again. Maybe I unchecked something by accident.
You might want to start a new topic since this one was about Atmos specifically and it sounds like you’re having general audio issues … maybe include a test version of the file or the media info as that will help determine what type of audio is trying to playback and failing. You can also include logs.
Logs: Plex Media Server Logs | Plex Support
Sample File: Generating Sample Files from Media | Plex Support
You might test the file on a computer via VLC if you have that handy - that way you can be sure audio playback is working on the file outside of Plex (VLC should be able to playback pretty much anything).
