Server Version#: 1.23.2.4656 (always the latest)
Player Version#: I don’t know
I know that Apple TV 4K doesn’t support TrueHD for whatever reason (thanks Apple), so I have been running Plex to test EAC3 files with Atmos. My sound system does not raise the Atmos flag when I play these files which suggests to me that Atmos is getting lost somewhere in the pipeline.
According to Plex, the file is being direct played as seen below
Yet my sound system is not identifying the sound stream it is getting as Dolby Atmos. However other services like Netflix do get identified. I have tested this with Lost in Space and the Dolby Atmos indicator lit up.
Any help in identifying and fixing this problem would be appreciated.
Getting Dolby Atmos to work on ATV is a bit of a hit or miss situation. For me it only works on old player, but then you lose ability to stream HDR including Dolby Vision. There are actually issues currently with playback of DV media on ATV , ergo the crickets in your post.
I appreciate the response regardless. Can you explain the old player aspect? AFAIK there is only one player on the Plex app for Apple TV while iOS and iPadOS have both the new and old player.
Alright I gave that a try, and the file outright would not play. It was stuck in a paused state. I also discovered some other things. The test files have both TrueHD and EAC3 Atmos, which seems to have completely broken the Atmos stream on those files. Infuse is capable of playing EAC3 Atmos and when I tested Nature’s Fury, the only sample file to only have an EAC3 Atmos stream, like magic, Atmos lit up on the sound system. I can only conclude that any file with multiple Atmos streams actually breaks Atmos in someway, and/or Apple/Infuse/Plex is not properly passing/reading the streams correctly in those cases.
Based on several EAC3 videos I’ve tried, some play and indicate ATMOS on my AVR, others don’t. From what others have said, chalk it up to Apple’s lack of interest in user supplied content. I’m running the newest version ATV 4K. Does a great job bringing my old purchased HD titles up to UHD/4K, I salute Apple as the ONLY streaming service that offers that (take that VUDU). In fact based on the number of titles - it justified my replacement of the non 4K ATV I had. But I just went for the Nvidia Sheild TV Pro 'cause I was so frustrated with the inability to play TrueHD 7.1 Atmos. This device deserves all the kudos it gets. Best streaming device (at least for PLEX). Hope this helps - 2 month later.
Having both doesn’t hurt. Was glad when the Apple TV app made its way to Android. Works pretty well on my Android projector. So ATV for all the Apple ecosystem stuff and Shield for the personal stuff.
Also tried playing EAC3 with Dolby Atmos on Apple TV 4K. ATMOS channels do not work.
Same file played in InFuse has ATMOS working.
I would like to know if a solution is in the works, can we expect a fix or should we forget about it and either switch to InFuse or look for other player (nVidia Shield Pro) ?
Sorry, I’ve been rather unwell, and was in hospital when you pinged me. This is still something that is being actively investigated and looked into, though we are getting to the point of the year where folks are taking much needed and deserved holidays, so we probably won’t see much progress for a few weeks
