New NAS or stick with DELL OptiPlex with i5-7500T?

Hello,

at the moment I’m running a DELL OptiPlex SFF with 16 GB Ram and an i5-7500T as a Plex (PlexPass) Media Server. That works quit well, how ever I have my Media at an almost full 8 TB USB 3.0 Drive. In addition I do have a Synology DS415play with 4x4 TB WD Red, where I have some backups of “important Media”, but not all. tbh, that is not really required. In addition to the Synology, I also have a QNAP TS-659 Pro II with 6 x 2 TB which host other important Data (but not the full disk space is used). An off-site backup of important data is also kept.

I would like to simplify the setup by getting one NAS with (min 4 bays with initial 2x12 TB) to run as a Plex Media Server, instead of the DELL PC, and storage.

I do have UHD HDR Media for my 4k LG TV, which currently runs just fine. I do not want to sacrifice on play performance nor on release delays depending on NAS Vendors.

What would be the best NAS option to get? Is there something that could meet the performance of that i5-7500T with Hardware acceleration of the NAS? I know the compatibility list and the DS918+/DS1019+ series, but I’m a bit worried about 4k decode only - does that limiting me anyhow to view 4k stuff on my LG TV? Is their a chance to see a DS920+ until x-mas that would be more powerful to provide full 4k support?

Thanks for any useful advise

@trumpy81 and using the NAS (UNC Patch) as a storage for the Media Library? I would like to get rid of the 8 TB USB Storage from the DELL at least. How does it perform if I use the DELL as a Plex Media Server but reading the libraries from the NAS - assuming a 1 Gbit/s connection in between?

The QNAPs are very expensive when it comes to i5 CPUs, not that price I would like to invest.

Running Windows 10, can map it as a network drive, no problem - wondering if it then put the drives in “stand by” in the NAS when there is no playback of media?

The DELL is a Micro Form Factor. No space for a 3.5" Disk not even a 2.5" Disk with 5 TB would fit in because they are so thick. Could build in a 2 TB m2 and a 2 TB SSD or HDD 2.5" … that is the maximum I could put in internally in the DELL MFF.
