New Plex Server Build

I was looking for some advice on a new machine for my Plex media server.

I have been running on a 2014 Mac Mini 1.4Ghz Intel Core i5 with 8Gb ram for a number of years now. Works pretty well for my needs - mainly direct play over my home network. Lately its beginning to feel a little sluggish and I would quite like to have the option of 1 or 2 4k transcodes for family members or when I am out of the house. I had looked at upgrading to new M1 mac mini but I feel there may be more cost effective options out there.

Any advice/recommendations would be appreciated!

Thanks

You may find this interesting.

And here are 2 specific inexpensive hardware recommendations for a server/transcoder box.

Discontinued but maybe available cheap if you are lucky: [Official] HP 290-p0043w Owner's Thread - #25 by JDM_WAAAT - Hardware - serverbuilds.net Forums

S01 replaces HP 290:

I was going to buy the S01 until I found suitable hardware in a closet… PCHD (PC Hoarding Disorder) strikes again, LOL.

Found this really helpful, thank you!

Glad it helped. I discovered it recently, and also found it super helpful.

Was exactly what I needed to read. Saved me building a fairly expensive custom build. Ended up getting a Dell optiplex 3060 with i5-8500 256gb Nvme SSD and 8Gb ram. Hopefully does the job!!
