New to Plex & cannot get subtitles

I have Plex installed on my TV. I am using the NVidia Shield for streaming. Heard a lot about Plex so I decided to give it a try. I don’t know the difference between server and player. I suspect I have player. I only want to stream and have no need for a library. Once I watch something I usually have no interest in watching it again.

I am able to view content but cannot for the life of me figure out how to get subtitles, which I need due to bad hearing.

Can anyone explain, step by step, how I can get subtitles on my Plex Player.

Are you using Plex Video on Demand, which has ads?

If so, those movies, shows, etc do not have subtitles.
