My laptop/server for Plex has stopped working, and I’m seeking ideas and options for a replacement. Should I simply replace it with another laptop/desktop, or should I consider the NAS route? Since this is essentially a dedicated Plex computer, I’m open to exploring different options if they prove to be more effective.
My budget is ~$500
I like to keep my Plex server separate from my NAS. I would try to find a all-in-one system, or build one myself, with a recent but not top of the line Intel CPU and GPU. Something like a gen 10-12 i3 or i5, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD… That ballpark. It would be nice to have the newest Xe graphics if it’s in the budget, since this system will probably have a long life.
If you have special needs like needing to burn in subtitles to 10x streams simultaneously then a bargain CPU won’t cut it though.
If you have very modest needs then a cheap Celeron based computer may be all you need, as long as it has Quick Sync.
AIO systems which are typical “Desktop” designs often have inadequate cooling systems. They cannot keep the CPU cool when it’s been running at full load for the whole duration of a video. The same goes for laptops.
