No longer able to direct play numerous formats on new app

Plex Media Server Logs_2025-05-02_19-37-13.zip (6.1 MB)

here you go. same episode, same two files (HEVC 10-bit and AV1), but this time able to be direct played. Android client version 10.26.0.2578 (6cc7ea1a)

Also need the app logs (more important for them tracking regressions)

Hopefully somewhere around here.

i’m assuming these are it. i zipped up the logs from /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs

No. I’m requesting the app (Android app) logs.

You’ve already shared the “Plex Media Server Logs” above.

Next is the Android app’s logs so they can trace what it didn’t do right

You can remove the link to Google Drive.

whoops, my bad. here:
logging.txt (600.9 KB)

@ChuckPa
I know technically you’re working on the android problem, but any chance for hevc playback with HomePods issue? It prevents me from even using the new app as almost all of my stuff is HEVC.

@zackotronic

The entire development team is out for the entire week (off-site)
A few of us are left behind to provide forum support.

I have the info for your issue –
I found the ios app doesn’t respect the iPhone “mute” button on the side.

Now I’m collecting all the info for the android team when they get back.

Please be patient. Nothing is going to get resolved until they get back.
My ATV 4K is passed through my Onkyo. If it weren’t for that, I’d be in the same boat

Honestly having the entire development team offsite at a conference or whatever is another dumb move on Plex’s part.

Yes, devs have to learn but knowing the breadth of the issues with the released app, this trip should have been canceled.

Could be an emergency retrospective after the communities reacting to their app update. We’ll see over the next week or so if there is any updated communications…

Plex team members at this off-site meeting is an “All Hands” meeting.

Remember, devs are spread all over the world in various timezones.

This gets everyone together, in one spot. at the same time, for a “OK gang …”

This was called up very quickly.

update - the latest Plex update on the play store (2025.15.0) now allows me to direct play the following formats:

  • AV1
  • XVID
  • FFV1
  • x264 10-bit

but these formats still transcode:

  • HEVC 10-bit
  • HEVC RExt
  • FFV1

@cosmicdrive

I’m going to need server debug logs please which capture this and, if possible, small sample files to include.

This way I can hand the entire package to Engineering with a smile :smiley:

FWIW: AV1 does direct play on LG (my issue). I did find a bug in the MDE handling. Would not be surprised if that’s the root cause of the others too.

My tablet can DP HEVC HDR (10 bit - bt2020)

Plex Media Server Logs_2025-05-04_19-26-56.zip (5.8 MB)

i did some more testing with a few other sample files and weirdly some av1 files will transcode and some won’t. i’m assuming it may have something to do with the AV1 encoder used for the file, as i have had some issues with files that were encoded using older AV1 encoders (particularly older versions of aomenc) even prior to the new Plex update

here’s a google drive folder that has some different formats. i labeled them in this format:
PlayResult_Codec_DynamicRange_BitDepth_Resolution
i’m not sure what your upper limit for a sample file is, but most of these sample files are ~50-60 MB

@cosmicdrive

Thank you.

I have the files.

I will get to them tomorrow or Tuesday (if Monday blows up in my face) :slight_smile:

@ChuckPa does this also address my issue (with transcoding when playing through HomePods)? if not should I start a new topic and is there any files you need?

@zackotronic

I don’t know what impact this will have on you.

Yesterday was a :collision: . Hopefully today will be better.

@cosmicdrive

Got some news for you :slight_smile:

ATV 4K (gen 1) → LG C1

Won’t bore you with all the details but playing on 2017 iPad Pro yielded same results

This is iPadOS 17.7.5

ONLY issue is app failure with VP9. AFAIK, there is a VP9 bug

FWIW, I downgraded my iPad to the old version (8.45), and it transcodes any videos I play where audio is output to Homepods. I know I previously reported this a few months back and thought it was fixed in the new Plex Experience back before it went to public release though.

@ChuckPa

my Apple TV is running tvOS 18.4.1 and have 2 HomePod 2nd in stereo paired.

I played the exact same video.

the first screenshot is running build 2025.8.2 and the second screenshot is running 2025.15.0

the only thing that changed from my end is updating passed 2025.8.2. I made no other changes to any settings.

@zackotronic

So that’s a regression.

Not the first. :frowning:

We’ll get it.

Can you please grab me the ATV player logs (or did you already and I’m being dense ? lol)
