Normalize Loudness from Analyze?

Server Version#: 1.43.5.11079-700011079
Player Version#: ???

First off, the Normalize Loudness option is amazing, we have been loving it, no more god awful quiet dialog and then a massive out of nowhere super loud explosion. I don’t have to constantly be vigilant with the remote increasing and decreasing volume on the fly the entire movie, THANK YOU!

Having said that, the methods in which to actually scan the audio is frustrating.

I know supposedly it does a routine scan of some items during maintenance, but I wasn’t seeing anywhere of which items may have been scanned, or if there is an overall status of it.

I know you can scan individual items manually with the “Analyze” option, and then it shows in the Activity icon that it is doing so.

My server is private to my household, so I wasn’t really worried about having the thing manually get started crunching all my media, so I went to the Movies section in the left nav and chose “Manage Library > Analyze”, assuming this would proceed to Analyze the entire library + a Normalize Audio scan as it does so.

My library is huge, so I understand it’s going to take awhile, but what is happening now is that did NOT trigger the Activity icon to report that it is doing anything. I can see some CPU usage in the Dashboard, but no status of any kind if there is any Analyze queue, or status indicator, or what has been scanned, or anything.

Is there a way to see any useful info on this mass Analyze? Or does the Analyze option from the Movies section not work in the way I thought?

Hopefully don’t have to be digging deep in the log files here to keep up with what is being Analyzed, if anything.

Thank you!

I’m not sure I’ll be able find the exact thread, but this has been discussed. The upshot was that they (Plex) didn’t think it would be a great idea to allow this to be triggered in-bulk like this due to the system resource implications.

If you start an analysis on an entire library, it would queue every item in the library. That would start a potentially long-running task which would run continuously until completion.

What you might want to do instead is use the multi-select functionality in the web app.

  • View your library by “Library.”
  • Hover over the first item you’d like to select and click the open circle at the top-left of the poster.
  • Hold down the Shift key.
  • Hover over the last item you like to select and click the open circle at the top-left (all items between the first and last items should be selected at this point).
  • From the action bar at the top, select the ellipsis and then Analyze.

Depending on your pain threshold, try this on small batches at first.

Ah, thanks for that, I did do some basic searching but did not find that post!

Understood on the in-bulk system resource implications, I figured that was the concern, but again for me I am totally fine triggering a long crunch on every item, but sounds not possible from the Library item.

The manually selected batch method sounds acceptable. Thank you!

No worries. I knew about it and I almost didn’t find it. But here’s what I was thinking of:

You’re welcome. Be careful with that  . I think you have to be fairly deliberate with your scrolling; if you scroll too fast, I think it messes up the multi-select. Or at least in the past that was a concern…

You can’t analyze an entire library.
