At the moment Now Playing is only viewable to the admin of the Plex Media Server.
I would love the ability to see what my friends are watching even if I'm not the admin.
In Plex/web we allready have the ability to add other myplex users as friends.
Would be cool if I we had the ability to enable that we could broadcast what we are watching to our friends.
Maybe the client watching something could send this information to my.plexapp.com where anyone who has you as a friend can see what you are watching.
And maybe even make a HTML clip that poeple can post in their signature on forums to show what you are watching/what you last watched.
(Trakt kinda does this, sends the information about what you are watching on your client to their server and its viewable by your friends/HTML signature.)
This way it wouldn't matter what server people are watching something on. The client you are watching on sends this information to all your friends.
There would obviously be some kind of privacy setting.
Maybe a "Private Watching" button like spotify has or something.
LOL, and so true, bu actually think, that we kinda have bigger issues currently than adding something like this.
So as already stated, it's a no-go for me, cuz I want the devs to code until blood drips from their fingertips on the new indexer instead, and after that, a lot of other things.....Actually...My personal list is kinda long, and your topic is sadly not on my list ;)
I really doesn't see this adding value to Plex, IMHO
Then again, been an old fart, I might just have missed the big picture, but....
AIST, Plex is about streaming stuff you got to either yourself, or closely selected friends, not to boast/broadcast....Might be wrong here, but simply doesn't see it.
It seems that this just works. But it also seems the the Now Playing functionality is only working with clients that support this, like Plex Home Theater. The old plex desktop app, and also PleXBMC clients don't seem to work with Now Playing.
I like the idea of seeing a now playing/recently played feature in the clients. Ideally you only friend your family and friends with Plex accounts so security shouldn’t be much of an issue. If it is then add some permissions to enable/disable sharing by section or something. There is a lot of bonus added to me with seeing what shows/movies friends are watching because with Plex I no longer get commercials so rely on word of mouth for finding new shows. This would be especially helpful if I see another friend with his own server and different content watching something I don’t have.
As for sharing outside of plex, I can take it or leave it. I tried the trait add on, and while it was novel I didn’t get much value added. Adding the current or last watched TV show to your signature is neat though.
