I sadly can.

Still no ASS/SSA support. :frowning:

At this point it seems apparent it isnt even remotely a priority so probably wont get added. Would have bought Plex pass last year if they had ASS/SSA support.

They works on the Plex AppleTV 4K app now. Maybe a fix is coming soon to Android?

Seems you were right, subtitles now seem to display correctly on a brief watch.

It works on Apple TV and not on Android because they use different players. ExoPlayer which is used on Android does not support ASS/SSA, but it’s being worked on.

Out of curiosity, what does Kodi use? Because whenever seeing content with these type of subtitles, it never transcodes on Kodi, but transcodes on the regular plex android tv app.

Kodi made their own player.

Just making sure this stays open until Plex adds support in their Android player.

I’m also hoping to see this support added eventually. On my Nvidia Shield I am able to direct play everything in my library except my anime with ASS subtitles, and my Synology chokes on the transcode to burn them in without a work around. I have a working setup now after much troubleshooting but it would be nice to not have to worry about it and just direct play!

Just making sure this stays open until Plex adds support in their Android player. Disappointing that there is still not fixed, now over two years later.

Still nothing. I keep getting Plex Pass ads but I’m not paying a cent until this gets fixed.

Bump
utterly insane this is still an issue.

Android app version 8.3.0.1.31022 (latest at time of posting)
Plex server version 1.25.7.5604-980a13e02 (latest beta at time of posting)

Still no progress on direct play of SSA subs on the Android client and still no indication that it is being worked on or even considered as something that requires work.

Credit where it’s due; I’m pleased to see that there does appear to have been some improvement in the transcoder on the server side of things so that while there is still a perceptible drop in quality of lower bitrate videos (like my initial test vid) when burning in the subs regardless of settings, it at least isn’t outputting a complete artifact-ridden mess as it did back in 2019. So uh, congrats on that I guess?

Looking forward to this thread’s inevitable, shameful third anniversary.

To give some credit to Plex support is better than it was in 2019, but it does still leave a lot to be desired.

Last fall @sixones mentioned in the ASS/SSA issue discussion over at the ExoPlayer github that Plex is working on full support. Would it be possible to get some more information on the work that is being done? It would’ve been really nice to know something about what’s going on inside Plex on this issue.

Support for full ASS/SSA support is very close, and should be available in the next release (or possibly the one after) - theres a few bugs left to squash.

Here’s a sneak preview of support inside of Plex for Android;

Next week I will prepare a build you can sideload if your interested in testing, support will include, full positioning, animation, styling, custom fonts, and everything else that ASS supports.

That was a lot more progress than expected. Thank you for finally sharing some news.

Incredible ! Really looking forward to test this !

Note: it will only direct play if the video format is natively supported on the device. Hi10p is not supported on the Shield in hardware.

Yeah, that’s important to keep in mind.

As far as I can’t remember the shield is powerful enough to play 1080p Hi10p in software. I don’t currently have a Shield, so I can’t test, but I’m pretty sure I remember it playing in Kodi. I guess Plex for Android doesn’t?
