Nvidia Shield vs Shield Pro

Im Roku’s are ancient and in need of replacement. Looking at getting Nvidia shield’s as Chromecast is build in and they seems to play just about everything without needing to transcode.

My question is, would the Pro be a better option with the 3gb RAM? Im using these primarily as a Plex player. Just wondering if it’s worth paying more to further future-proof, or would the 2gb be sufficient for the life of the device (5 years-ish)

OK, gonna go with the cheaper one.

Hard to say. There have been issues with the tube one at first, which seem to be resolved now (stuttering with 4k material). If this will become an issue again in the future cannot be predicted. For sure, the more memory the less likely there will be issues.

Wait for the Pro (not in stock anywhere) or try get the 2017 model.

My 2017 Shield TV has worked great. Still plays all the 4K HDR content on Plex without an issue. It’s just missing the Dolby Vision and Dolby ATMOS that comes with the newer model.

The power brick started to make a buzzing noise after 3 years so I replaced it last week with the 2019 Shield TV Tube. That was a mistake. If I try to play 4K content it stalls, the menu stops working, onscreen controls won’t appear. I managed to get it playing content after a number of attempts but it would skip, drop audio and stutter.

Before anyone says anything. The Plex Server is a docker container on Unraid with 64GB RAM, an 16 Core Xeon and the content is running from 14TB WD Red disks. I also tried moving the content to the 2TB M2 SSD just in case. It has 10Gbe to a 10Gbe switch then 1Gbe into the Shield TV. The content still works fine on the old Shield TV.

I’m returning the Shield TV Tube to Amazon.

What Atmos support is in the 2019 models that is not in the earlier models?

The Plex app on my 2015 Pro passes both TrueHD + Atmos and Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos to my receiver.

Thanks for the info, I didnt know that the tube was such a potato. Might even just go back to Roku as mine worked fine for so long.

I’ve only just received a new 7.2.4 Atmos receiver and additional speakers today so I wasn’t aware Atmos worked on the old one. Installation and hiding all the extra speaker cables is my plan for the long weekend. Only ever had DD+ and DTS True HD up to now but the new Odeon Dolby Cinema they opened near by got me thinking about upgrades again.

I only got the Tube because the Pro wasn’t in stock and I only looked to upgrade at all because the power brick is buzzing and I can’t find a replacement. Nvidia won’t send me one either.

I’m in the same situation, just updated my receiver and speakers. Now looking for upgrade to my Roku 3. Just looking for a Plex client and was told to get a Shield. So I guess I should wait till I can get a pro? Any other good options.

With the news of the new Chromecast Ultra’s ill just wait for that. Chromecast’s are great, they just work, I just like to have a remote.
Looks like the new Ultra solves this issue.
