I’ve spent about two weeks just reading up on the forums, looking at the history of Plex, reading MANY blog posts, talking to people from here AND about here. I’ve looked at what you do, how you handle yourselves, how you present yourselves and how you do business on a day to day basis.
I have to say that I’m extremely and pleasantly surprised by what I’ve seen. I know that there has been a turbulent history, and I know that some of the wounds have yet to heal from the past…but time moves on, you know? Time is a great healer…I know because I have first-hand experience of it.
Generally, I have very little down-time for myself these days with a demanding job, demanding family, and a faith that is central to my life. However, on looking at Plex and what you are trying to achieve, I feel that in some way I might be able to bring a little benefit to the project, albeit a small part.
I dont have a lot of time on my hands, but what I would like to do is spend some time (maybe a couple of months) to create a skin for Plex. It’s great that you have the MediaStream skin as well as a couple of other skins to work with, and I’ve been told that they look great on Plex. However, you dont currently have a skin of your own and, until you do, you’re going probably going to be sitting in the shadow of your big brother. As with all software teams, you want to distinguish yourselves as a project and software in your own right. This is where I would like to help out.
I’m a designer and I love to design…So what I will be able to do is create all of the views and images that a coder would need to create the skin. Coding is something I know nothing about, so cannot help you there. However, my experience of working with a fantastic team of coders has given me a lot of understanding of what is required…and I would like to give this to the Plex community if the ‘bigwigs’ are happy with that. I’ll try and spend some time on the forums to understand what you guys really want out of Plex, and to see how viable it would be in a skin (from an interface perspective).
Please dont misunderstand me…I’m well aware that you’re all waiting for CentreStage to appear. From the screenshots I’ve seen it will look fantastic when you get it. However, you dont have it at the moment, and from what I’ve read you’re not sure when it will appear. If it turns up within the next couple of months then thats great and I wont mind stopping any design work I’ve started…the impetus is that you have a skin of your own. If it does not appear for a while then anything I do create can be used or not as you see fit.
If I can help you guys out in the meantime for a couple of months, then I’m happy to.

Mike, thanks for the support! Hopefully this will help draw some skin coders to make some very Mac like skins with the polish that ended up in mediastream!

Thanks for the very warm welcome and encouragement. I’m not sure how much value I can bring, but I recognise the need for Plex to stand out on it’s own…after speaking to some people from here I think I’ve met some very like-minded people (both in a corporate and personal sense), and hope to build on those friendships / relationships in the future.
