Is it possible to only allow the play back of media that is already encoded? Essential eliminating the trancoding features and only allowing direct play or direct stream? I ask because I’m hosting for quite a few family members and I would like to transcode in VP9 but plex does not support it. Though, FFmpeg does and for quite some time too.
“As noted, any VP9 video will be transcoded by Plex to H.264 as VP9 is not supported by very many clients at this time.”
I don’t understand how VP is not supported. Damn near everything plays VP9 with hardware based decode. It has been YouTube’s codec since 2012. This is why I want to use it as I feel that it would make Plex a little bit more responsive and use nearly half the bandwidth. It just baffles me that even in home streams take about ~1-8 seconds when rewinding but yet YouTube is near instant. This is an extremely frustrating problem for my “users.”
Bandwidth is my biggest challenge right now. I recently acquired a Quadro P2000 to handle my hardware encoding needs and it works beautifully. Just wish I could switch to VP9 transcoding and send to my devices.
