Yep, it is YiFi
I use the enhanced player with MKV files on my Apple TV 4K, iPhone, and iPad and it works great. Everything direct plays under the right circumstances. Note however that it will re-mux to an MP4 container if the audio needs to be transcoded (e.g. True HD to FLAC). In that case it direct streams.
Yup - thought that’s what that smell was.
Without going any deeper than this:
Look for a bit rate of 2500Kbps , or better, with Audio your Device can Direct Play.
Now, for something completely different.
I’ll reacquire better source material of all my movies I don’t care. But what about when I rip my DVD? Should i just try a few settings? MP4, MKV
Video Compression 101, get rid of anything dark, and anything light because those will be the “least noticeable”; Also, only re-encode pixels that change beyond this “x” threshold; because that will also be “least noticeable”. The problem is, the more you compress, the more you clip the black point and the white point, and the greater that “x” variable becomes, causing pixellation, ghosting, etc. So when you try to compress a movie that was originally 40Mbit, all the way down to 2Mbit, the artifacts you’re getting, are par for the course.
If I was you, I would get the original blurays, and then transcode them down to a point where you’re going to be happy with them. Streaming services, such as netflix, have that point set around 8Mbit for 1080p.
Here ya go:
That’ll get you started - and you’ll adjust accordingly/as you see fit - once you create some stuff (previews are best - in an Other Video Library), look at it to find out what you have to do to make yourself happy.
(A Roo Farmer has recently been watching some of my stuff - on his BIG TV and I’ve heard no complaints - he might just be polite - perhaps he’ll chime in)
Strongly agree with this. And if this is not an option, and all you want to do is change the container for some reason, use MKVToolNixGUI or a similar program to re-mux it. Re-encoding an already low-bitrate file via HandBrake is almost certainly not what you want.
and i have no issue with the blacks on Netflix A. Prime that’s why i figure it was a file issue. I just want the best optimized file for PLEX as I can.
I have to get ready for class, but shoot me a private message on this forum and once I am back (2 hours or so) I can provide you with some more information.
That’s about all you can do at the server - the client app is where the good stuff is.
Ideally - you want to make that area in the server moot - by Direct Playing everything. If the transcoder doesn’t kick in - those settings won’t matter - but if they do, the stock settings are fine.
This.
If you start at the top and work down - that is the way.
If you can’t start at the top - start as close as you can to the top.
I mean, I have approximately 5,000 hard copies of BluRay movies here… and I spent less than $1000 acquiring that collection. Several times a week I stop at various Pawn shops on my way home and browse their movies, and a few times a month I search Craigs List and Facebook marketplace for movie “lots” that people are trying to get rid of… I haggle the prices down in all cases. Any duplicate movies I get (which I do get a lot) I sell to either the pawn shops, craigslist/ebay or places like Vintage Stock (I never buy movies from Vintage Stock). So it keeps my acquisition costs down… It’s ridiculously easy to pick up slightly used movies since everyone wants to go netflix/streaming services now.
I mean, that’s the way I started out in 1994, sure… But at less than .20/movie these days, I’d spend more than that on a VPN, a seedbox, and everything I can to keep myself safe, not to mention the piece of mind I have that someone isn’t going to come kicking in my door and asking me how I acquired my my movie collection. All I have to say is “It’s all right over there, in boxes”
Yes, but usenet also has a cost involved as well… Seriously, even if I was paying as high as $0.50/movie I’d have no problem doing it this way, thankfully I’ve been smart about it and I don’t pay that much, but if I did, I’d still be satisfied with this choice.
So they won’t have to tear your house apart looking for those Discs you ripped illegally - my Peace of Mind is I welcome the FBI to kick down my door and haul me off to Prison - they can take over my medication and health care costs.
As I said, it’s along my route to and from school & work a lot of the time.
Thankfully, most pawn shops have a relatively small collection so I can usually make my purchases in 5 minutes or less
And for the Marketplace and Craigslist stuff, it’s almost always near where I live…
As I said, it’s super cheap, and I prefer ripping from source rather than starting off with an already compressed copy anyways.
You mean purchased legally, through 2nd hand markets. But you can believe what you want juice, I take literally everything you say these days with a grain of salt because you think you’re always right and everyone else is always wrong… so…
and when the FBI comes knockin’ (I don’t for a minute believe they will - and I’ll have to keep on buying my own medication) ripping those ‘legal’ disks to share with ‘others’ puts you in the next cell over from me and just think of all the fun we’ll have.

^^there we go - forget that the last time.
Ahh… But that’s something easily fought and won in court, and I would fight it.
