Optimized Versions

Hello World …

My question is regarding optimized versions.

Lets say I have a movie that is 12G in size, 10-bit, HDR, 1080p.

My Android Shield in the same local network, wired Gigabit, will play that without blinking with direct play, and probably the Roku over local WiFi too.

My kids, however, connect to Plex with their iPad. Transcoding isn’t an issue, but i want to avoid it if I can.

If I “Optimize for iOS” (4MB/720p – i think) … will Plex automatically choose that version for them, on the fly?

What about other incarnations? Can i recode for multiple audio/video formats and containers? Will Plex deliver the best file/format for the use case?

Your feedback is appreciated!

From what I have seen plex will deliver the optimized version if and only if its an exact match to what the client device is asking for. So if you have an HDR 4K video and create a 4MB/720p optimized version. Plex will only play the 720p version if the the iOS device’s player is set to 4MB/720p for remote or local (whichever you are using). If it’s a different setting (maybe it was changed to 8MB/1080p) plex will use the largest possible version to transcode on the fly.
