Perceptual video quality assessment VMAF for transcoded video

Something that I think would be a helpful for those who use PMS transcoding is a built-in addition of the VMAF tool. The tool analyzes video, and delivers a perceptual quality rating. Being able to compare ratings of transcoded videos made within PMS across different systems would eventually help the community know what hardware works best for our needs.

Say I have an aging Intel i7-2600, and you have a newer 12th gen chip. We could rip the same bluray release, and compare the VMAF ratings of our two systems transcoding that same video. This is a much better data point than a simple “how many transcodes can she crank” approach. VMAF analyzes the quality of the video.

Here’s the github to the tool. I would love to see Plex bake this in.

Edit: I thought more about it, and this is a dumb idea. External tools exist, and plex should stick with what it was designed for.
