Playback issue on PC

Hi everyone,

I have a plex server on an M1 Mac Mini, it works perfectly and I have set it up to play directly when remote via port 32400. This works well for everyone except one friend where bigger files (e.g. 5gb 2160p h265 45 min episode) won’t play (we both have superfast fibre connections). FYI he is using the Plex app for PC.

Here is a screenshot of his PC info. As a Mac user (and someone who isn’t the most techy anyway) I feel like this isn’t a very powerful machine and the processor and GPU are probably not powerful enough to process the files at his end, can anyone confirm?

Playback is set to maximum and my understanding is that setting lower will just make it transcode which will actually require more processing power but if anyone can advise on which settings to tweak to help that would be amazing.

I’d say yes. That machine is likely not able to play 4K files or full-bitrate Bluray rips. The CPU is 11 years old by now and there is no dedicated GPU chip either. Even when it was new, it was a low-end product.

Ask them to compare the results of “Plex Web” and the “Plex for Windows” app.
Do also ask them to try and reduce the quality/bitrate on problematic files.
