Playing HEVC File (just 720/1080)

Guys,

Hope you can help I am running a Synology DS415play with Plex 0.9.15.1.1639.26325ea (latest manually installed), on a Rpi2 ver 1.0. I cannot seem to play HEVC files, I have tried changing the direct play settings on the Pi and on the Server to no avail. Am I wasting my time, is there a working solution for this. i like the idea of the space saving using the HEVC format.

Thanks in Advance.

Warren

Rasplex does not support HEVC.

No Direct Play for HEVC on RPi1/2, only solution is transcoding, your Synology probably doesn’t have the raw power for it though.

Knight,

I have a Synology DS415play which should be man enough, what setting do i need to change to try (both on the PI and Synology Plex sever).

Thanks,

Warren

Ned,
is there a work around though, as Knight mentioned can I try to see if the NAS can transcode?, if so what are the settings i need.

Warren

Leave your settings in Rasplex to Direct Play, anything not supported by the RPi will then be transcoded by PMS, Rasplex will let you know that it is happening.

Regards

The DS415Play has an atom processor, I can’t seem to find any details on it though, it’s a CE5335 but I’d be surprised if it had the horsepower for transcoding though.

HEVC is heavily compressed. My 8 core 4.0GHZ AMD has trouble transcoding it the RPI’s in realtime. You could try switching to different client. Some of the Minix players claim to support HEVC/H265 but I don’t think any of the Plex clients support it natively. The Plex Clients tell the PMS what formats they can accept, anything outside that gets transcoded. I don’t know if any of the Plex clients have HEVC set as an acceptable format, even if you have the hardware to run it.

Guys,

Thanks for your replies, shame as it would have saved be TB’s of disk space… I have 3 PI2’s and a I Mac running Plex clients, Plus the DS411Play (7Tb Used) running Plex server and a DS413j (10Tb used) with about 0.5 GB of space between the two (all Movies and TV series). So as you can imagine the HEVC miracle seemed to good to be true.
