control over my media server= tyrant, dictator etc
LOL what the hell are you talking about?
You want to control your server. As do I and everyone else.
Wait that means everyone’s a tyrant and dictator. That can’t be true.
lol this conversation has gone off the rails. I’ll bow out now.
Glad this is over, not in community best interest the way it’s going.
What about people that don’t know enough about Plex to know how to disable these kinds of things?
All users have had the following…
I get that not all users are of the same skill level, but at one point does this in-your-face guidance and introductions to new features become too much? And at what point should we assume that there will always be people that don’t pay attention?
Ultimately, these new changes have been introduced to us as admins and users better than any other set of features plex have ever delivered, in my opinion, and hopefully this trend of user-centric feature releases will continue. Good job!
So far, I have had zero complaints, and three "cool"s about the new feature.
Some of my users may get benefit from these offerings. Some may not… But if you’re sitting there and didn’t see this coming a mile away, you’ve not been paying attention. This is what they’ve been moving toward all along. Next step? Could we see a PlutoTV like offering with Plex channels? Who knows? But I do know that it’s not going to stop, especially if the statistics support ongoing usage/adoption.
Now you have no excuse to be prepared for the next offering, because it’s coming.
You do have this choice. You are the admin of your server. The fact of the matter is that the Online Media Sources are not your media, if you want to decide who can/can’t see it then you need to set up those users as Managed Users.
As others have stated, this is incorrect. By them having access to your server, yes they are your users. Buy them having plex.tv accounts, they are plex customers.
And an irrational one at that. A solution has been given to you so many times. If you want FULL unhindered control of what your users can/cannot see (and they are only connecting to your server) you should set them up as Managed Users.
I will not re-post what I have put at the beginning of this thread, other to say It’s insane someone should have the ability to control what another plex.tv login can have access to for content that you do not own/host (on your server.) How would you feel if I just started removing playlists from your Spotify account? That is a Pandora’s box that you do NOT want opened.
I’ll say it again: Set them up as Managed Users
What I do not get is why so many think they must pay something extra to Plex just to get out of this add infested hell for their users. Yes, 99.9% of users on every Plex server is the user of that server, not a plex.tv user.
Plex should be a media player. It cannot even do that properly most of the time.
I have payed Plex for the right to use their software. All my users have created plex.tv accounts just to watch media on my server and some of them even payed Plex a pass to encourage development.
It is not our fault Plex decided to stretch its legs further than the length of their bed.
Enabling this crap by default is a lame move. Most of my users only know how to press play and pause. Expecting them to know how to disable this add malware is a big ask and Plex is counting on this.
Some companies are taking the term “user hostile” to new limits.
Please show us the gun to your head demanding you watch the free content. I do understand the content issue but can not understand your position, that you are forced to watch the absolutely free content.
If you look at it from Plex’s point of view, potential subscribers were asking for content. Plex is a business and the software model did not include content till recently. DVR was a stepping stone for customers that had their own content, yes built in Com skip. Other sources followed that were replacements for plugins. Yes I said it, that dirty word so many were p…ed off about. I won’t even start about Tidal, but once again so many think Plex have a gun.
If your constantly having issues that bother you so much, maybe it’s time to look elsewhere. I once did but quickly found solace and returned with efforts to learn more of my networked options with hardware. I can declare that Plex 's software offering is far more mature than it’s competitors. Maybe that’s the reason from some subscribers arcing up with fairly small issues, their acknowledging Plex has a product that better suits.
Guys enough of the hostility.
There is no such thing as free.
If a company gives anything for “free”, you are no longer the customer, you are the product.
If you do not know this by now…
…and you’re still not forced to be the product. Opting out is possible.
And not even remotely difficult.
Is the air you breath free?
Is the water from the sky free?
Is listening to your rambling Free?
Absolutely
It’s reading, not listening, and not free - internet, electricity and the like.
See where this thread had led us!
I must be lucky, no extra cost for Internet or electricity. Fixed Internet plan and my Solar system as taken care of those costs but my neurologist advice has been to eliminate an irrealivent vision annoyance. Lol
Who’s rambling now? Typical troll behaviour that has nothing to do with the original thread but personal (kind of) attacks. You are not forced to read this or any thread here.
If people are feeling that Plex heads the wrong way and are thinking about what does it take for Plex to re-consider, then the Plex user forum is a valid location to do so. No matter if you or I agree with them.
So, please continue with exchanging arguments… and thank you for doing so.
Look, I dont care if tehy put their own stuff in there but I want my home screen back. Now whenever i open up plex it shows their crap and it doesnt show my on deck. I have to scroll through the menu to get to it. Even when I disable their online sources it doesnt show it just shows less on the home scree but NONE of my content. Mine is buried in a menu nightmare.
Here’s the information you need to customize the Home Screen:

If you happen to be using PMP - every time you switch from Pweb View to TV View it blows the Home Page, requiring yet another Pinning Process.
Rumor is they’re working on it.
In the meantime - don’t switch views.
Hey Zach,
I feel the same way. It started when all of a sudden the powers that be over at Plex were like "let’s scrap this whole open source stuff and become a proprietary only media server. It doesn’t matter the only reason we are where we are is because of the amazing open source community.
Ending support for 3rd party plugins was a major red flag for me. I kept hearing that what was coming would more than make up for no supported Cplugins. I t didn’t. It just put a bunch stupid shows and movies, basically now I get forced to watch ads and Pluto-esque context.
Now I am considering a couple different options: emby, jellyfish, or just abandoning the server all together and just trying to find a server the I can access as a user and yycuf
Plex was never open source.
