Plex Ambilight

I'm thinking about making my own plex ambilight, and I just want to double check a few things through with people who have already done some development using the apis plex provide.

My plan is to use the photo thumbnails that plex shows on the website when you are watching activity. I will then on a server pull it down to one colour and send that to an arduino to display.

I'm guessing it will be easy enough to query plex to find out what a particular client is watching, and what thumbnail it's up to? Also it looks like there is a thumbnail for every 2 seconds, but I could be wrong on that. I'm hoping that will be enough for an ambilight not to look too out of sync.

Any thoughts?

This is not the right way.
To have a true ambilight (meaning to replicate the immersive effect that the original has), you need to work off the live video picture with no lag. I've seen demos, when there is only a 0.2 seconds delay, it shows and it is annoying!

Something like that exists already for Rasplex on the Raspberry Pi 2.

here is a demo from a different system

Thx for this Info. The Link ist no longer valid. lightberry.eu

I do not really Understand the lightberry system. Even because they Do not explain in Detail what they sell.

Do you have any progress?
The thing that would be great is a Plex Server Addon that would send wirelessly information to a ESP8266 powered LED strip

I currently use Hyperion + Kodi to wirelessly control an ESP8266 enabled strip WS2812
