I know we have seen the demise of plex plugins for whatever reason.
But a Plex App Store would solve many of the anger issues caused to users by Plex flailing around to try and generate income streams.
Apps would be provided by Plex and the community.
Apps could be free, incur a one-off payment, or a monthly subscription. 30%+/- of income from apps would go directly to plex for hosting the store and the service. the rest of the proceeds going to the devs of the app (if not developed by Plex).
This could then give an opportunity for plex to abstract features into a premium category instead of needlessly giving away new features (as current to lifetime pass members) and see an actual return from development time.
By separating non-core features into apps this would also allow users to customize their own plex instances. e.g âmovies from plexâ or âtidal integrationâ could be a free âAppâ for people that actually want Tidal integration (probably not many).
Monthly premium âAppsâ could include things like:
(Generally, anything that would cost continual development time or 3rd party licensing/subscription fees for Plex)
- Plex Movies without adds
- Some kind of Crunchy Roll service
- DVR
One-off payment âAppsâ could include thing like:
- Plex SudoTv
- Spotify/Apple Music/Deezer Integration
- Sonos support
- Plex ebook Reader
Free Apps (Anything not included in plex core features that some people may not want on their plex instance but others would)
- Podcasts
- Web Shows
- Tautulli
- Sync Lounge
- Smart Home integration apps
This solution would allow users to customize their own plex instances without be forced crap they donât want.
This solution would stir a recently lost sense of community among users and developers.
This solution would also generate income from Lifetime pass members like myself.
I would personally pay for something like Sudo TV for Plex.
