Plex bringing streaming services together

I saw a post recently somewhere that said Plex was in the process of trying to negotiate with the big streaming services so it could become a one-stop shop for all media. Has anyone else seen other info about this and if it’s true when do we think this might happen a this would amazing?

You have a link to the story?

I think it was this one.

Further confirmation that PLEX’ primary focus is no longer personal media library management and playback.

Without rehashing all of the details, the writing has been on the wall for some time, as evidenced by the unaddressed service requests littered throughout these forums (some of which date back years) regarding glitches, bugs and lack of basic functionality.

I get it. That business model is dead. But if like me you use PLEX primarily to manage and play your personal media library, then you might want to start transitioning away, now. They’re going to cut us off completely at some point. Their streaming partners will demand it.

Centralized anything is a really, really bad idea, be it government, healthcare, news or entertainment oriented media content.

Don’t panic… this article dates back to Jan 2020, pretty much right after Plex introduced their video-on-demand service.

I never panic. I plan. My assertion that PLEX’ original business model is dead and that they’re moving away from personal media management to curated streaming services is spot on.

I think defending yourself against the whims of vendors is the right strategy under all circumstances. I too picked up plex to manage my own media flock and nothing else. If their product direction moves away from this Im not tied to them.

The primary way to do this is by fully automating all setup tasks. Code as infrastructure. I can delete all my libraries and recreate them automatically, perfectly, with no manual fiddling whatsoever. Dropping plex would mean dropping my investment in a lot of custom scripts, but that’s not a scary prospect. Transition would be frictionless.

How so? Just because a company adds new features doesn’t mean it’s moving it’s focus. I mean Costco has a great food area, it doesn’t mean they’re closing the warehouse and going into the restaurant business.

This is like when Plex has a new release for iOS, we must be dropping our support for Android and vice versa.

Your Personal Media is still a major component of Plex, it’s no longer the only component, but still important. There will be more features coming out related to your own content.

Yes, personal media is still a major component, but it’s no longer the primary focus (of the development team or interface). I get it. Resources are finite, but there’s no disputing that the business model has changed and PLEX is moving in a different direction.

Personal media libraries are just that, personal. When I launch PLEX, I want it to feel like I’m opening a family photo album. A very personal, sacred and protected place.

The integration of 3rd party content blurs that experience. Like every other tech company, PLEX is now all about connectivity and community. That’s not what I’m looking for in a personal media server. Actually, I started using PLEX specifically to avoid that.

Yes, I know. I can turn off Live TV, News, Tidal, Web Shows, content ratings, reviews, etc. But why should I have to connect to a remote server in order to listen to an album or watch a movie that resides on my home network? The answer is, I don’t.

PS I can tell you the exact moment I realized PLEX was headed down this path. It was several years ago, when I opted not to renew my PLEX Pass.

And I reupped my plex pass to put more cash in their pockets because I didn’t want them to have to start pimping for the very streaming platforms I’m trying to avoid
