I am having trouble with Plex playing some of my content and I can’t pinpoint the problem. My modem/router are set up in my living room (downstairs). Plex seems to stream fine to my Roku TV in the same room, but it constantly buffers in my bedroom on my Roku box (which is upstairs and on the opposite side of the house). I assume the problem is my WiFi connection, especially since Netflix, Amazon, etc. stream fine, but I want to be certain it’s not some problem with Plex before I invest in a router upgrade (my current one being 5+ years old). Is there something I can do to determine where the fault is?
Borrow a long ethernet wire and use it to connect your router and your upstairs Roku. If that is working without buffering, you know it’s the WiFi connection.
After reading a bit deeper about how Plex works, transcodes and whatnot, I was fairly confident that replacing my modem/router would fix the issue. I ended up replacing it and now Plex zooms along just fine (along with some other programs).
