Plex Fireside in the Forums

Hi there, 1 year ago, some users including me reported a bug with playback with subtitles on Samsung TVs, there’s still no fix for it, I believe that being able to watch content with subtitles is a core function of Plex. How long does it take to fix a bug?

Totally agree! We surface recommendations like these in Plex Web — for instance, on an artist page we present Plex Recommendations on TIDAL and Artists You Might Like (from shared servers) which are artists similar to the one being viewed… but we don’t show those specific content rows in Plexamp, and off the top of my head, I don’t recall exactly why…

yeah if we could get those in the plexamp app it would go a long way. discovery while using my personal library is the one major issue i have with plexamp (although its still easily my favorite music app to use)

Are there any plans to create collections across multiple libraries?

This may be challenging to quantify, but please bear with me. Roughly speaking, what percentage of all new features and implemented ideas come from community users (non-employees) vs. Plexians?

I assume there are at least semi-regular brainstorming sessions that take place within each Plex department, where employees are encouraged to share their creative ideas. Many of these ideas have surely been implemented throughout the years, and many probably have not.

The Plex community has also had no shortage of great suggestions over the years - many of which have been implemented and many which have not.

Ultimately, I guess what I’m wondering about is how much influence the community has on the overall improvement of the Plex products. Bug fixes aside, of course.

And a follow up question is how does the Plex team decide which ideas do get implemented and which don’t? I’m interested to learn a little bit about this behind-the-scenes process if you are able to divulge anything on it.

These questions are really neither a here nor there, but I just can’t help but wonder! Even if the answers are potentially terribly unexciting haha. Thank you.

Dont use built in tv apps you issues will most likely be resolved.

I can learn to appreciate the intentions with the new Search feature, but we have lost the ability to get to the Live TV (tuner) search results in 1 click. Please can you add this into the filtering options? With the latest update, you have to choose Media Library, and Pick your library, and choose the library+1, and finally choose Shows. This feels a little backwards.

Hi @d2freak !!

Unfortunately, not right now. This has come up multiple times and has some employee support but you mentioned some of the reasons this is a big challenge. You called out the magnitude of the size of the database but that isn’t that big of a challenge (we can scale up a db size pretty easily).

The bigger issues would be around the matching and handling of the sheer number of tracks. I ran a few quick google searches to show how hard this would be (note I have no clue how accurate these numbers are, I think they are more relevant to show the magnitude differences between databases). In these google searches i saw a number of ~130k movies in tmdb and ~625k for imdb. We already have challenges with just movies and that doesn’t take into account tv shows with different airing orders vs dvd orders and many, many more episodes. The google search for musicbrainz showed 30+ million recordings and 42+ million tracks. This would present a massive challenge, hence no current plans to create this.

Thanks for the post @dugl !

We have talked about something along these lines for how we could not spoil tv episodes in a show, but haven’t really considered the DVR side of things - I am going to add this to our discussion board as I think you hit on the one way something could be done here in surfacing different options for thumbnail generation.

Thanks @JasonsPlex for the feedback! Since I work with the engineering team I don’t have any insight into the possibility here - but I think it would be a great addition and if the project comes down the pipe I would be excited to work on it!

This may have been discussed earlier in the thread; if so, I apologize!

But since many of the comments here have put forward ideas for new features, I’d like to suggest that should any of them be implemented, that they be made either opt-in or opt-out, whichever has the least impact on an existing server (or client).

I’m thinking specifically of features such as credits detection, when it was rolled out. As soon as the feature went live all my applicable libraries on multiple servers began being scanned for credits. It required an active settings change for each on my part to stop this.

And thank you for opening this discussion! I’ve very much look forward to the fruits of y’all’s labor in the days/weeks/months/years(?) to come!

Just throw it in postgres

Hi @pshanew !! Thanks for the comments!

We have definitely learned some lessons here! This is one area where we have actively listened to feedback and we put quite a bit of effort into creating opt-ins or opt-outs where possible and also in what default settings are used.

I can’t commit to always providing these options, one made up example that comes to mind is if we had to change something from a security perspective, but generally we know that not everyone will like all new features and some people will want to disable them.

However this move is impacting tons of legitimate users including me. I have been running my Plex Server from the same IP for the last 3-4years. I even paid to have the hardware upgraded on the server hosted at Hetzner and we just received a notice of 10-12-2023 Get off Hetzner or your service will stop functioning. From my standpoint, the attempted commercialization of the platform by individuals is absolutely an issue and is Against TOS. However I have enough family and friends that I’d like to still be able to use my connection at home, as I already host 1 server at home. As a Lifetime Plex Pass Member I am very disappointed by this decision and may have to move to a new software platform should this stand.

I’ll be sure to flag any that I see going forward

Oh this would be lovely…

A few times I have seen a thumbnail that makes me aware of a development I was not expecting… and the surprise is ruined because now I AM expecting it. Have wondered if there was a way to blur/obscure thumbnails for unwatched episodes and I would appreciate such a feature.

image
Example of a spoiler in the thumbnails... 2 Astrid's in an episode of Fringe

The above example doesn’t quite apply to me since I had watched all of Fringe before I had heard of Plex but it’s the first thing that came to mind because on a recent watch, as that episode came up, my first thought was, “Oh yes, Astrid got to meet herself” and I imagine it would have been a major spoiler if I was new to the show…

I’m also thinking of blurring the episode synopsis on an unwatched episode too - but give user a way to read if they insist. This is because I always make an effort to avoid reading a synopsis if I haven’t watched a movie/episode. I’m not always successful

So I recently read that Hetzner IP’s will be banned from the service. If this is true, what’s to stop the people selling Plex shares using some other host? Are you just gonna ban them all one at a time like whack-a-mole?

Also, won’t I just have to uproot my whole server again when you guys eventually decide to ban OVH, or Leaseweb, or whatever?

I don’t have enough upload bandwidth at home to reliably remote stream Plex to my phone and other devices outside of my W/LAN, so “Move it all home” isn’t a valid option. For $40 a month, Hetzner gives me $1000 worth of hardware to use, along with tech support, and a symmetrical gbit connection. If I have to choose between that and Plex, my choice is Jellyfin.

I’ve seen some terrible spoiler-laden descriptions for movies and TV too. I would probably use a feature that concealed thumbs and descriptions for unwatched shows. It should be something I can set as a library default and then toggle per show though, so once I have seen it, or if it’s not the kind of show that has spoilers, I can make it look prettier.

I have just read a couple of posts on both app consistency and smart tv app performance.
The latter tends not to be an issue for me as I normally navigate and then cast from my mobile. (It’s an infrequent client as I normally use Apple TV)

But doing this is when I noticed that on the LG app there’s no option to give a rating to media in the way my Apple TV, iPhone or Shield allows.
Is this option likely to come to the smart TV apps?

This is so wonderful and timely. The negative sentiment regarding communication or lack of it was growing and concerning. I really hope Plex remains true to the commitment.

I absolutely adore Plexamp, my favorite thing ever (I swear) is playing my random favourites with DJ Stretch… love it :bangbang: Close second is the Deep Cuts Radio with an auto DJ to suite my mood. My only gripe which I have sprinkled across various forum posts is the overlap in sweet fades when one is using the Sleep Timer. Just seems to get overlooked and posts go without response, here…

And here…

Glad that the moderators are getting the love they deserve. I have seen the kinda of flak they get sometimes from the community as client-facing staff. They deserve credit for the work they do. @BigWheel @tom80H @OttoKerner @ChuckPa etc you guys are awesome‼️

Hi guys,

I found some interesting topics in this thread. Congrats.

My own concern is metadata (content) for movies and TV shows.
Plex chose to abandon Python 2.7 (as it grows older and older) as the base for third-party-addons.

Your new agents for movies and TV shows do not support third-party scrapers/agents.
This is a shame.

I am maintaining the OFDB agent, have added to the SportsDB agent, got an agent on its way for adult content, have created an add-on for movie awards and would be about to program other content agents (for example, fernsehserien.de is a huge metadata provider for German TV show content).

Are there any plans to bring back support for 3rd-party agents that actually provide metadata for movies and TV shows (using a more recent scripting language)? The API is fine, but does not support adding metadata for objects.

I wouldd be willing to rewrite my agents to support that new metadata support agents for use with your “new” agents.
