Pro Week ‘25: Fireside in the Forum Question Submissions

Greetings Plex pros!

Welcome BACK to our annual Fireside in the Forums event!

My name is Kevin and I’m back with our amazing group of Plexians to answer your questions and listen to your feedback. This has been an interesting year, and we are excited to hear what you have to say.

This event is also a great part of one of our favorite weeks of the year—Plex Pro Week! We’ll be kicking off Pro Week this year on Monday, September 22, with another year of amazing content.

New Pro Week, New Rules

For the Fireside this year, we will be doing things a little bit differently. It can be very hard within this forum space to run these events as they spark a lot of conversations that can sometimes veer off in some fun directions. However, to try and replicate the spirit of an AMA (or in this case, Ask Us Anything) we will instead use this forum topic to collect your questions. Simply submit your question here, and they will be answered during Pro Week in a special thread.

Note that the answer topic (which we will start posting in on Monday) will be locked for responses, but you are welcome to kick off new topics in the appropriate forum area if you would like to dig deeper into some areas. Please also note that while we will do our best, we may not get to all questions, and we ask that any questions related to support and technical issues be added to the appropriate forum area as we won’t be addressing them in the AMA. Finally, please use Jeopardy rules here and make sure that your post is in the form of a question, otherwise we might miss it!

The floor is now open! Joing us Fireside in and ask away! We have some great things to share with you this year for Pro Week, and we’re really excited to continue growing the Plex platform and personal media community together.

This open call for questions for the 2025 Fireside in the Forums AMA event is officially live and the thread will be closed at 5 PM ET on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. We’ll follow up here with a link to the “answers” topic once it’s ready and will be posting answers to questions throughout Pro Week.

Thanks for participating in our Fireside in the Forums event and for your long-standing support of Plex. You are awesome!

—Kevin

A few housekeeping items to note:

  • We will edit questions that are being (or already have been) answered stating that the question has been included in the Fireside Q&A and including a link to the response post
  • We welcome feedback, but please note that posts with additional comment or that do not contain a specific question will not be included in the Fireside event. Please use this thread for questions and post feedback in an appropriate forum area
  • Forum rules apply, please keep things civil!
  • See you Fireside!

Two questions I’d like answered this year:

(1) I’d love it if I could stream directly off my Plex Server without needing an internet connection, just my intranet. Why? I live in Florida. When we get hit with hurricanes, I lose external power, but I have a generator for the house. My connection to the internet goes down, but my fileserver and intranet are still up. But, no videos from the server. :frowning:

(2) I’m guessing a lot of AI-related topics are going to pop up this year. I’d love to know more about your AI-related initiatives, but I’m particularly interested in using AI for library organization and eventually library recommendations.

Fireside note - apologies as I just realized that the original answer post here was pointing at the wrong answer post. This has been answered and the link corrected.

Hey! Is CommonSense ratings integration still on the roadmap? If so, how’s it going? If not, what made it be deprioritized?

Have a great Pro Week!

Well, I think the elephant in the room are the New Plex Experience Apps and the way you are planning to go forward with them.

I think the message from all of us is loud and clear: Nobody asked for that and most of us absolutely don’t like the UI, but in especially the UX of them. I think I don’t need to repeat all the feedback we gave you about the unusable navigation, the missing features and the absolutely shocking rollout process of buggy, slow and half-baked apps, that were not even out of beta stage.

For Roku TV (and I think that also holds true for the mobile platforms) you recently made clear in your recent post, that you are not planning to roll the new apps back to the usable interface Plex had before.

Instead I guess, you will move on and bring that unusable UI/UX to every platform, like initially planned?

My questions would be: Why? It seems you just WANT to break the product we all love and used all these years. Why aren’t you taking our feedback seriously and readjust your plans and instead repair the new UI and UX and take your time until the new apps really are READY for a release?

Or why aren’t you at least rolling out the new experience as a NEW APP, next to the classic one, providing them side by side, until they reach feature and experience parity?

Your ui update for Plex on Roku is by far the worst UI I have ever seen in my decades software developer. I thought Windows Vista was bad… All I can guess is you are intentionally trying to crater your app so you can close shop gracefully instead of going into bankruptcy. In any case I move on to Jellyfin. It’s missing a few bells and whistles but it’s stable and IT HAS A SIMPLE UI!! Imagine that!

Common Fixes

I think you have the idea

Fireside Note: Thank you for the fireside post! We are definitely exploring ways on making onboarding to a new experience better and appreciate this feedback!

Remote Access:

Remote access has been problematic for years. No double NAT, no internet problems, just PLEX being unable to consistently connect. This was true on my WIN10 server, now my WIN11 server, and friends LINUX set ups. It fails on every server update and I have to fuss with auto or manual set-up.

Problems:

  1. PLEX reports no Access while my daughter is connected across the state. Its reporting of access is not reliable.
  2. PLEX connects and then fails within a minute (no NAT problem)
  3. PLEX might need to be restarted to get access - right after updating and rebooting. Restarting a fresh reboot does not make sense.

Fireside Note: We would be happy to provide support here but will not address this item as part of the Fireside AMA. Suggested forum area for assistance: Remote Access

I would love if PLEX PHOTOS gets some must needed updates. Is there any plans to let users upload photos from mobile devices to servers? Alternative to Google Photos?

I would love to know if there is plans for PlexAmp to be added/compatible with Android TV (either from set top based Android or TV Android OS). The music options within Plex on TV are not nearly as good as the PlexAmp offering

Every album in music library has a low quality art image on it. What are the plans to make finding which of the many album posters for an album on the edit page is the highest resolution or the best quality?

I have a LG CX oled TV. The Plex app for WebOS has been very laggy for the past few years. Are you planning on improving the WebOS app for a fast and well performing user experience?

Many issues posted in this plex forums have never been taken into account by the devs (for example many issues with the plex app for consoles) is there a reason ? Lack of employees ?

Add an official Transcode Proxy system: allow a Plex server to register multiple Transcode Proxy services. On playback, the server checks availability; if a proxy is up, it delegates the transcode to it (via DirectStream/DirectTransfer to the proxy)—preferably using my powered-on personal PC with GPU as an on-demand worker; if none are available, the server transcodes locally exactly as today. Keep session metrics intact and support a simple UI/API to manage proxy priority and LAN path passthrough.

Provide a supported workflow (API/Webhooks/Tasks) to plug in an LLM (ChatGPT/Codex-CLI via user key) for metadata match fixes and batch renaming, with dry-run diffs and rollback.

Add a first-class “Books” library (PDF/EPUB/CBZ/CBR) with reading-progress sync, bookmarks, server-side previews, standard metadata, and mobile offline.

Fireside Note: We would be happy to discuss these topics but they all seem to be Feature Suggestions, please add to or join existing conversations there for these.

How about a cool album view in PlexAmp when the display window allows it? It would be sooo cool if it was possible to view lyrics, visualizer and album art at the same time. I am thinking widgets in the UI… also could be cool to view a full album playlist as alternative to “Back to”, “Up Next, and “Related”.

Edit: just adding this would be a killer feature for a future android TV/Apple TV PlexAmp app

Upload system: Add a option for add content via web client. When the server is in remote, you have open remote connection for transfer. Add it directly on web interface with some parameter (Name, year, Server to put, …) and plex web client filter et rename correctly all data is send (create directory with good name), tv show rename, … and support multiple files sending

Fireside Note: This looks to be a feature request for uploading via a web client to a Plex Media Server. Please feel free to post this as a suggestion in the Feature Suggestions, forum area.

Is there an update coming where when I share a music playlist with a friend that the playlist is visible to them and not just all the songs in the playlist are shared?
