Plex for Mac, HDR support?

Hi,

Does Plex for Mac support HDR content when direct played?

I can’t find a answer.

Pass-through = no

Tone-map = yes

MPV (the video engine) does not pass through HDR on Mac to date (that I know of). I don’t even know if macOS supports 3rd party apps doing this yet.

MPV tone-maps HDR content to SDR so it should look acceptable, but it doesn’t pass HDR metadata to your display.

Hmm ok thanks for the information, would be good to know if it’s even possible.

It looks like 10.15.4 added support for 3rd party monitors to display the OS in HDR10 , but to date I don’t believe any HDR APIs or SDKs have been made available to developers. Without those, they cannot write apps that send HDR to the display.

This is really up to Apple, and it’s unclear whether they are interested in letting apps display HDR content. Their own apps like Quicktime and TV can. Whether that’s simply to develop the code in a closed environment before a larger release, or simply limiting competition…hard to say.

WWDC keynote is the 22nd, so perhaps there will be details on 10.16 supporting HDR in 3rd party apps.
