Okay, I get the reasoning if someone doesn’t have something like a Mac mini hooked up yet – but for the many people who do I don’t see an advantage replacing that with a new AppleTV, is what I meant.
And no, the USB port does not limit apps, it being locked down limits my access to external media that I already have.
I have the same set up right now, plex server and player on Mac mini connected to TV.
The reason why I wanted something else like the apple TV, roku or Google nexus player is because of the gorgeous interface, voice search and because I can use the computer while someone else watches a movie, I’m not locked anymore.
Just for the record: I will also buy the new Apple TV if a nice plex integration is available. The other features are nice, but to be honest, I will use it for streaming plex content 99% of the time, so this is what really counts.
I have a question to all of you who are using a Mac Mini as a playback device. How do you control it? I have to scenarios in my home and while I really like one, I hate the other:
Samsung Smart TV running the Plex for Samsung App. It isn’t perfect, but I rather like it, the interface is perfect.
Old Non-Smart TV and Apple TV 3rd Gen. Using the Plex App on my iPhone to stream to the ATV. I am not the greatest fan of this setup because I find the iOS controls much more awkward than just using a remote for Plex. Also I have to reboot the ATV before every use or the streaming will fail. I’d kill for having a great remote and seamless integration. Siri would be icing on the cake, but just using the new remote - which seems really great - would be worth so much.
So I’m wondering if there is any really great and intuitive system for using your Mac Mini as a Playback device. How do you do it?
I have the Mac mini hooked to a Samsung home theater and that to the TV.
The home theater take care of 5.1 surround sound and outputs video to my TV.
I control what movies I watch via the app on my note 3 or nexus 9 which is awesome, the player on the Mac mini feels kinda outdated and harded to navigate, that why I am interested in the new Apple TV (no roku or nexus player in my country).
It makes sense that PC does not work on the new device (yet?) due to the new GUI, and that which is beneath it. One does wonder if the profile setup we use on current devices would allow us to put self signed certs on it (It should support profiles, as you’d want to manage it via MDM in a corporate environment, and Apple seems to be pushing this with IBM).
One thing I do want to say is that I’m in no way belittling the efforts by anyone who develops and maintains PlexConnect. It is a great effort and very much appreciated. If we can have it on gen 4, as well as an official Plex app, then it’d be great. Choice is always good.

PlexConnect won’t work without a major overhaul, I think that a native Plex client is also much better. I will post more info once I have more, but as for now assume that PlexConnect will only be maintained for 2/3.
I’m getting the new Apple TV. I’m sure the PLEX TEAM is working on it right this minute to get us a big surprise as usual. - I would also LOVE to see that DTS and Dolby Digital 7.1 (which is supported now from the new APPLE TV) will also be supported from PLEX. Currently I use a couple of AMAZON Fire TV’s with KODI as Player to get DTS - I would love to have it integrated in PLEX without using a 3rd party player to have all the futures. PLEX will be PERFECT then. THANKS GUYS !!! Surprise use soon

I gave up using the Mac mini years ago. I have a 2009 Mm and as I tried to keep up with the storage demands of my growing library it was just generating too much heat in my closed in media cabinet under my TV.
When I found the Samsung Plex “Smart TV” app, I moved everything to my current main machine–an octocore 2008 Mac Pro. It houses two internal 4 TB drives holding my library of movies, TV shows, and music. I enjoyed it for awhile until newer TVs showed up, pushing the devs into essentially making mine obsolete in the eyes of Samsung (eat it, Sammy).
My next step was to move to my 3rd gen aTV using the Plex iOS app and throwing content to the aTV with AirPlay. Not the best solution, but the best up until the time that I got PlexConnect/OpenPlex working and I am completely content. I use my Logitech remote to control both my TV and my aTV with macros that make it a snap to switch between regular TV viewing and content on the aTV–including my Plex library.
I hope that the Plex team won’t be dragging their feet with the new aTV. This could be a massive win for them–just imagine being asked by Apple to present their app on stage at a keynote. The doors would blow off the company. I want to buy one of the new models, but I will wait until I know that Plex will be there with a wonderfully designed and functional app. Until then, I’m totally happy with my current set up.

I am using Plex and a mac mini for my home theatre set up. I use Rowmote Pro (iOS App) to get the Plex HT app up and running, and then using the Apple TV remote to control Plex HT. The Apple remote works well with the Plex interface. I obviously can’t adjust volume etc. with it. I actually have the Savant home automation remote for the theatre room and can control plex through this as well but I find it easier to use the Apple remote.
I also have Samsung Smart TVs in the house and run Plex on those as well. I have one of the Samsung’s connected to a multi-channel amp but unfortunately the TV doesn’t do passthrough (as far as I am aware) so currently using an Xbox One to run Plex if I am wanting to use the amp. I am hoping I can use the new Apple TV with Plex for this purpose rather than using another Mac Mini. I am hoping Savant will port their app to the new Apple TV as well which would give me whole of house control from the screen.
Oh yeah I already knew that, it’s a give having an app store now. The real question is now how long it will take to develop a working client for us plexpass members to test out. Maybe they can use the iOS client already existing, tweak it and work with it.
I wonder if TestFlight would be open to use for apps on the tvOS App Store? Ok, so it’s only going to allow 1000 test users per app, so that is somewhat limiting for Plexpass members, then again, perhaps that is enough for all who would install it on 4th gen.
Good to know it’s confirmed it is coming to tvOS though.
I won’t be buying the new apple tv - its full of gimmicks, which they claim are new! (i.e. Roku boxes have been doing some of this stuff for ages). Also it no longer has an optical out. I will be continuing to use my 3rd generation Apple TV and its annoying as Plex could easily run on it properly. I have tried plex connect - problem is I am using a service like unblockus to switch netflix regions, I found it fiddly to use and with issues.
My set up is Apple TV 3rd gen and an Xbox One, so I am hoping the Plex app is released as paid for soon (on xbox one), so I can use that. I don’t use Plex enough to warrant the plexpass.

No ongoing fiddling needed, just copy the DNS in your aTV over to PlexConnect’s settings (ip_dnsmaster).
I was just selected to receive an Apple TV Developer Kit. Can I help in any way (I am an iOS and JavaScript developer, and of course a big fan of Plex)?
