I downloaded Handbrake, and I admit I have no idea how to use it. With the MakeMKV rip, it gave me the option to add the French and Spanish subtitles, with the DVD-Decrypter rip, it gave me the option to add the CC subtitles. It’s actually what I expected, but maybe there’s an option to include the CC track from the MakeMKV rip I don’t see
Your right, it sure doesn’t look like it’s there after using MakeMKV on that disc.
I’ve spend about a half hour looking through a few hundred DVDs trying to find a cover with CC in them and I’m coming up short. I’ve got boxes of DVD stored in the garage but it’s to cold to walk out there to look for them today.
I do want to try and find a disc like this to try this.
HehHeh - I found my disc on the top of the first box in about 30 seconds. My version of MKV was about 6 months old, and I’ve been doing some google research and came across some mention of CCExtractor embedded inside MakeMkv to get the CC track as a srt file. Downloading the latest and greatest and gonna try.
And, sure enough, the new install finds the CC track, and converts it to a srt file in the MKV. I think you need V1.41.1 or newer to get the CC extraction from DVD’s

That’s your problem right there. Google is too modern. DVDs and closed captioning… you got to use the tools of the era… maybe Altavista linking you to someone’s howto page in Geocities?
Don’t forget MySpace pages too. Lots of people stored tool links there.

I have some old VHS tapes of my kids from 40 years ago. The quality is awful and always in mono despite my best efforts.
If your modem has the standard Hayes compatible instruction set, use “ATDT*70,” in front of the rest of the number you are dialing **. If it’s not Hayes comp, or you don’t pay the extra few bucks for touchtone, you poor soul.
** = Beware of angry parents or roommates, this disables call waiting.
I’m not paying for touch-tone. It’s not really that much faster, the noise is irritating, and I like watching the dial roll back. Besides, it burns a few extra calories.
– on a side note, I remember my Granny was furious when her phone had to be replaced (the dial wouldn’t return) and the phone company couldn’t give her a replacement dial phone, because they didn’t make them anymore.
I am interested in Plex being able to sustain development efforts.
However, I have children, and I am not ok with some of the content that is listed in plugins, news and podcasts.
How about allowing PlexPass owners have access to turning on/off the content vs non-paying customers being subject to it?
Just a thought.

How do I control whether News shows up in general?
Access to Plex News is controlled at an account-level basis. If you choose to enable or disable News, then that will apply to all Plex apps signed in to the same Plex account. The only exception to this is that the admin of a Plex Home can control general News availability for Managed Users in the Plex Home, too. (Managed Users cannot control their own News availability.)
If you choose to disable News for an account, then it will not appear anywhere in Plex apps associated with that account.
You can access the setting under Account > Online Media Sources when signed in to the Plex Web App with the account in question. When editing the setting, the available choices are:
- Enabled: News will be available for the current account (and any Managed Users in a Plex Home the account administers)
- Disabled: News will not appear anywhere in apps for the current account (nor will it appear for any Managed Users in a Plex Home the account administers)
- Disabled for Managed Users: News will be available for the current account but will not appear for any Managed Users in a Plex Home the account administers (default selection)
You can also disable other online content you don’t want available…
For the record, I really don’t much care for the inability to let server admins curate online content for their users, and this is not limited to Managed Users in a Plex Home.
In my use case, I’m a server admin and so is my dad. Between us, we have 3 servers: one at my house; one at his; one at the lake. I want my nuclear family to be able to access the lake server while local and my house server while local, from our mobile devices. This means I need to set up my family as Friends of both my dad and me, and add them to my Plex Home. (Having separate managed users for the Rokus/ATVs at the lake is a non-issue).
Now, this means that I need to log in to each and every account (including the non-admin account I made for myself) every time I want to change server-independent account-specific settings (like those in Online Media Sources).
So denying me the ability to fully curate content, including online content, for my family is annoying. It is certain that they would rely wholly on me to adjust those settings rather than try changing them themselves. You can be certain that the easiest thing for me to do is just disable Online Media Sources for each account altogether rather than log in and curate them separately and individually. And that makes any effort you put into developing those features completely useless to us.
I know this. I don’t use Managed Users, as I said. Were my family Managed Users, they could not be Friends with my dad’s Plex account and use their accounts to access his two servers. Additionally, because the accounts are Friends (albeit in my Plex Home) and not Managed Users, I have to log in to each account separately to change those settings.
Also, like I said, curating the content individually, on a regular basis, is still a much more bothersome activity than merely disabling it entirely. So Plex is wasting their time on it as far as I’m concerned, especially for as long as I don’t have direct control over curating it from an admin standpoint.
As I understand it, you as admin, don’t want the content available from your server, turn it off and have your Dad do the same, if he so wants…
If you made individual accounts for all your kids, then it is up to you to configure their accounts so they only see what you want them to see… Just like I do on my daughter’s phone for the apps I allow her to download and install…

Plex is dead set on the idea that those are their users, not yours.

And (PMS hosts) keep reminding them, should another product that (PMS hosts) decide better fit (PMS hosts) needs, PMS hosts are taking majority of their users with them.
Some of (PMS hosts) who payed money and time/sweat/blood keep hoping (PMS) will get better, so keep coming here, watching, in fear it won’t.
You should have been able to disable Podcasts there as well…
