Plex is trying to transcode 4k HEVC files instead of direct play.

Settings>Local Quality>“Original” is no longer an available option. It has been replaced with “Maximum,” which doesn’t support 4k (UHD) nor HDR. I had to uninstall all updates to watch my 4k or HDR content. This is a real bummer considering Plex lists 4k HDR as a supported format for the Nvidia Shield Android TV. Note: there is also a thread on the same issue in the Android TV subsection.

How do you remove the updates?.. Updates to the media server app I’m guessing?

Play Store>Shield>Uninstall Updates
I think the client and server are part of the same app in Play. Uninstalling the updates reverts me to 5.6.1.505. The server reverts to 1.7.4.4017. Not sure what to make of that.

Reverting to build 5.6.1.505 fixes the issue. Thanks.

When will this fix be ready? I reverted to the older builds back too, to solve this issue.

I’m having trouble playing any 4k content through Plex on my SHIELD (on device or on my computer via WiFi) as the video glitches and stops a few seconds in with audio playing another minute or two before Plex crashing and giving an error message.

Using VLC app on my SHIELD, the files play with no issues.

Is this the same failure mode being discussed?

There is a temporary fix. You can uninstall all updates and setup the app again on your Shield (Remember to disable auto updates in the Google Play Store app. Latest working version is 6.0.1.523 if you want to install it manually.

The server is a different app, and you can see it update itself in the store app. It’s a system app, though, so it’s found at a different place.

HERE’S THE FIX:

nVidia Shield TV running Plex client with Plex Media Server running on a Windows PC.

After trying multiple versions of the Plex nVidia Shield TV client and the Plex Media server it is only these versions which work every time.

  • Plex Media Server v1.5.7.4016 (uninstall latest version and install old version. All settings/media libraries are kept).
  • Plex client for nVidia Shield v5.6.1.505 (Uninstall all updated. This is the base factory install of Plex on current version of nVidia Shield Android OS)

In the Plex client I have the following settings:

Video
Local Quality = Original

Advanced
Direct Play = Auto
Direct stream = On
Passthrough = Auto
Refresh rate switching = Off

AND A BONUS: CHAPTERS ARE WORKING AGAIN!!!
Great side effect of rolling back to previous version of Plex Client and Server. In fact, everything works. No downside of rolling back at all.

If you need an older version of Plex Media Server you can sometimes find them in the Updates folder below your Plex data folder.
e.g. %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Updates

Good luck.

so other words, Plex is killing us with that trans-coding thing, I can’t even play my normal blu-ray movies, it lags like crazy and it keeps on crashing, on the other hand Kodi is just showing the tru ecolors of the movie without any trans-coding hardware and GPU delay, could it be better to downgrade the latest version to the other version advice>??

I’m sorry but I just have to ask if you actually have read any of the last posts?

Thank you so super much! I just upgraded from the mac mini to the Shield to get the true 4K. What a disappointing day but you saved it! Thx!

My problem was that most of my videos couldn’t get the correct codec…

I really miss the layout from the Plex Home Theater. This android app isn’t near the beautiness of the PHT

Ok, with the downgrade we can fix the 4k problem for a while. What is with an Update from the Plex team to fix the 4k problem? Have anybody news? I hope for a statement from the Plex team!

I have on top the problem, that 1080p movies jerk. Every 20 seconds. 720p movies running very good! Have anyone an idea? Thank you.

Shield Settings: 4K 59,987Hz - 4:2:0 BT2020 -> goes to Yamaha RX-V681 -> Panasonic 58DXW904 LED

hey your right I was looking for the trascoding part and the 4k showed up, my bad, but here is a question for you guys, are you guys ripping the 4k bluray disk or just playing it directly from the BD-rom???

Plex needs it to be ripped first, it’s not a BD player.

@Plex - any plans to resolve this issue? I have exactly the same problem int hat since the update on my Shield, 4k will no longer play, the connection to the server is lost

I want to add to this and say I am experiencing the same issue. Plex is transcoding content that can normally play on Direct Play.

Have anyone tried 6.2.1.1036 relesed jul 19 on Android TV?

yes, same problem

Where can I download the “Plex Media Server v1.5.7.4016” apk file? I’ve looked around…APKMirror, etc…no uploads of this specific version. I do have an older backed up version of my original installation that came installed with the 5.2 SHIELD system update, but it’s Plex Media Server v1.4.x.xxxx, and I’d rather have the version 1.5.7.4016 mentioned here in this thread. I also can’t find an archived apk of Plex Media Server v1.5.7.4016 anywhere on this site to download. Does anyone, or can anyone here who has the Plex Media Server v1.5.7.4016 either installed or the apk file saved somewhere, put it somewhere on cloud storage and share the link temporarily so I can download it and see if it will fix this problem? Thanks!

@jsdecker10
The version of Plex Media Server referred to in this thread is the Windows version and not the Android version. It is for people using the Shield TV as a media client rather than a server, e.g. the nVidia Shield TV running Plex client only with content streamed across a network from Plex Media Server running on a Windows PC.
