So I recently setup a Synology NAS to store all of my Plex media. I am planning to start collecting 4K movies. I am going to be getting an Nvidia Shield so will be direct play from the server that is running on my PC. My question is now that I am going to be having files of different quality, I am wondering if I should have a Movies, Movies (Blu Ray), Movies (UHD) directories to keep them separate. Or should I just put them all in one directory? I also have some movies that I have the UHD and Blu Ray for. Should I put both files in one folder and then just chose the version I want to play from Plex? This is the first time I am really starting to setup Plex and try to get it organized as best as I can.
Is there a use case for keeping more than one version of the same movie? If you havea 4k version, would you expect to play the 1080 version much if ever?
So the main reason I want to have the 1080 version is for remote play cases where I know I can’t direct stream the 4k version. I know having the server transcode 4k is always a bit of an issue. So I was thinking have a copy of each (since I have the space) and not have to worry about it.
I keep a “Main” 1080p/SDR Library and a separate “UHD” 4k/HDR Library.
It can be annoying but I think it’s the right choice today.
When I rip anything in 4k/HDR, I also I make a 1080p/SDR version. And anything below 1080p goes into the “Main” Library too.
I only share the Main (1080p) Library with others. Remote clients can usually direct stream 1080p/SDR, avoiding transcoding and ugly HDR -> SDR conversion.
Having a 1080p version is also nice when I’m in a rush and syncing content to a mobile device.
At home I can choose the 4k/HDR Library where it will direct stream.
If HDR -> SDR mapping becomes feasible, and I get a faster server, I might merge the Libraries and delete the 1080p duplicates. But by then I’ll probably need to repeat the process for 8k media!
I think that sounds like it will be the best way to go.
