I still have the problem where HDR content just shows a blue screen on my HTPC running Ubuntu, which by now is on 20.04 (Gnome version). Running the same 2.58.0 AppImage on my Manjaro PC (KDE version) works, however. Can anybody shed some light on how to fix it on Ubuntu?
I can only assume that that is the relevant difference - my HTPC is also the Plex server, running an i7-3770 and using the internal graphics there. My other computer is an i7-920 with a dedicated graphics card (Radeon 7870).
You’re not alone with the issue. After upgrading to Kubuntu 20.10, the AppImage no longer starts for me as well. I tried the 2.56 build I had originally installed, and the latest 2.58 build you tried. Similar logs for me:

Also confirm that I was able to launch by overriding to use the older i965 driver using MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE env var (Context for those like myself that didn’t know what that env var did). I didn’t choose to export the var though. I used the syntax in the above link using the variable as a prefix to the command that launches the AppImage.
I was also able to fix the desktop integration, mostly. The solution that seems to work for me is:
cd ~/.local/share/applicationsnano appimagekit-plexmediaplayer.desktopEXEC key/value pair, and update it to the following:EXEC=MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=i965 "/path/to/PMP/AppImage" %U
The only catch to this is that on launch, it’ll always ask you to integrate into the desktop. You have to choose NO, otherwise it’ll overwrite your manual changes to the .desktop file. On the second question where it asks to stop asking, you can say YES to that, though that also surely means that with the next PMP release, you’ll have to manually update the .desktop file’s EXEC command to the new releases’ filepath.
Also having the issue that PMP won’t start any more on Manjaro KDE. MESA override doesn’t seem to fix it for me. (The integration pop-up does appear so I imagine the change worked.)
I’ve given up with Plex Media Player, it seems end of life as it hasn’t been updated in a long time. Plex on the new Google Chromecast is a good alternative!
I’ll be trying the web interface more, seems like that’s what they want us to use.

Well, it happens what I guess we all have expected. Plex Media Player is slowly dying as any software does if it does not receive active care.
That makes it very hard for me to keep Plex at all. I am not willing to invest money into new hardware, while the one I have would be fully capable of doing all I want and even better than all this android TV devices, which cannot do much more than just play media. I hope I find a reasonable replacement for Plex. Do not get me wrong. I actually love (loved) Plex and over the years I think I got quite a good value from my lifelong Plex Pass. But not offering a decent client any more for major platforms is a joke. The browser-based version is not a replacement for PMP. I would never have guessed that this can happen. Is there some kind of deal going on that device manufacturers pre-install it and in turn Plex is cutting off the solutions for users, who build their own client devices?

For this current release of ubuntu I can live with the workarounds. So I guess at least for a few months I can still use it. But it really seems to be time to move on. Thank you everybody here for your support. I really appreciate all the private effort that was put into creating and supporting an unofficial Linux version.
Yeah I agree mate. Been a long time user of PMP on Linux and really appreciate the work the community has put into it (especially Knapsu!) however the writings on the wall - it hasn’t been updated in ages and 3.0 is nowhere in sight so to me it’s end of life.
For $50 I’ve found the new chromecast to be a solid replacement, at least Plex keeps it up to date with other platforms!
I think devices like chromecast are slow and a pain to use compared to a NUC, My TV is an android TV and supports Plex client app. So I can actually try the Plex app on it. But compared to PMP on the connected NUC I am not impressed. It is a pain to use and therefore I did ignore it. It is a 3 years old mid-range Sony TV. So it is not really ancient or low budget hardware, but Plex feels slow and unresponsive in comparison to PMP and with problems playing newer processing intense codecs. Ok, the latter was also an issue for PMP on Linux until the spring 2020 Ubuntu update brought new library versions.
However, Android TV might actually be an alternative, if Plex or media streaming in general is the only thing I am interested in. But I also would like to have other apps such as a mail client and web browser running on the device. I use them as much as PMP on my main TV in the living room. The web browser allows me to read news, do shopping and access the frontends of home automation, alarm system and router if needed. The experience is so much better than any android TV app I have seen and for most of this there is not even an app available.
Especially the seamless switch between applications and the operation with a wireless keyboard (Logitech K830) is so convenient. It is of course true that in PMP I mostly use the arrow keys and the volume buttons on the keyboard, but for the other apps a Keyboard with a NUC is a must have. Everything is much faster to access and switch between (just “alt-tab”) than on any android TV box I have seen. Web browsers are not even available there.
If I need to have another device now, I would need to switch HDMI inputs on the TV and the TV remote becomes needed again. I can then also not let for example PMP play something (Music for example) while I use other apps.
All this would work, but it feels like two steps back in convenience and usability and I am asked to also spend money and maybe buy a new box, just to take these steps backwards. Maybe I am spoiled by many years of having my setup working and got use to it. And maybe I should be humble and accept the way google and Plex want me to use their stuff and pay whatever they think is right for me.
I really hope I find a way to preserve the experience and find a suitable alternative for PMP in the mix of applications I use. Right now I am thinking of experimenting with Emby or maybe try to get used to Plex within the web browser. I tried Plex in Kodi some time ago, but I did not like the UI. Any other Ideas?
Because of the other applications and overall experience I have in mind it is not an appealing solution for me to abandon the NUC or complement it with another box.

Also wanted to chime in on the X11 VAAPI from before, VAAPI is also the main accelerator for amdgpu and amdgpupro- tho the second one can do some openCL manipulations, it’s rather spotty

Yesterday i made an smart playlist for movies, and it broke the view for movies (‘there was an unexpected error’) when i use the PMP appimage. Even after deleting the playlist, i still get the error message.
I can see the movies when i’m using the plex web version. I tried repairing the db with a previous version, but that didn’t help.
Any clue how i can fix this issue?
@Knapsu tried downloading the latest release and the daily build AppImage from your website but I can’t break 100kb/s downloading them. ETA is 20 minutes for the download to complete. Not the end of the world, but for future reference, are they mirrored anywhere?

I use Zap (GitHub - srevinsaju/zap: Delightful AppImage package manager) to install/update my appimages and it able to update via github, but not a simple website.

Mirroring is currently done by hand and I do not plan to automate it as PMP is no longer actively developed by Plex Team. My bad was that I missed the 2.58.1 release notification. Corrected myself and it is now mirrored on GitHub.
With zap you can install PMP with
zap install --github --from knapsu/plex-media-player-appimage
I’ve made a request to add Plex Media Player to official AppImage Catalog. This should make installing it with tools like Zap even easier. Hope it will get accepted.
