Plex Media Server 1.16.7.1597 (Updated) - New Transcoder Preview

I’m on Arch and build this from your source, and I know that ya’ll all think I’m a pain in the ass, so you may not care. But this builds and runs properly for me so far. I can get to the settings now and don’t get that symbol error at runtime, etc.

I can’t wait to throw some content at my Nvidia card. I’ll let ya’ll know if I encounter any issues with pertinent logs, etc. I’ve been waiting for this for a really long time. Years.

edit: here you go. I can’t provide any video files for reasons. But any 4K remux will do. Particularly if you want to rewatch the scene where Tony does the snap.plex.logs.tar.xz.tar (954.8 KB)

It wouldn’t allow me to upload lzma compressed files so delete the redundant .tar on the end.

This is on a CentOS box running kernel 5.2.0-1 and nvidia driver version 430.34. Hardware is a Quadro P4000 and CPU is 2 * 12 core Haswell procs @ 2.8

Same here.

Win10 + GTX1060. Detects both nvdec and nvenc then fails back to software transcoding.

The log also says hardware transcoding: zero-copy support not present. Not sure what it takes to have that present.

No logs but just a thanks. This updated media server eliminated several problems on my QNAP TVS-471 (updated to i7) NAS/Plex Server. I have been using it to record off my HD Homerun as a DVR. I moved from NVidia Shield to Roku Ultra as a playback device and HD Homerun signals have to be transcoded to my TV due to the audio. Playbacks frequently stuttered, had artifacts, etc. Very frustrating.

Now, all gone. I don’t know what changed in the server. I changed NOTHING on the settings or the hardware. It just works. Relief.

@Cafe_Diem Without logs covering your various playback issues, we won’t be able to investigate.
Please include yourPlex Media Server logs and a sample file that reproduces these issues .

I have seen others post logs with HW transcoding issues that have a p2000. Has this been resolved?

no chance to get this working here on unraid docker

i install the ubuntu package and it looks ok, after restart docker its downgrading again …

tag VERSION tested as

I was able to get my unraid plex docker to use the new version by doing the following:

I created a new plex docker using the plexinc docker from community applications.
From the docker tab on unraid I clicked on plex and selected console.
From the console, i ran the following commands.
a. apt-get update
b. apt-get install wget
c. apt-get install nano.
d. wget https://artifacts.plex.tv/plex-media-server-alpha/1.16.7.1597-a6e223f7f/debian/plexmediaserver_1.16.7.1597-a6e223f7f_amd64.deb
e. dpkg - i plexmediaserver_1.16.7.1597-a6e223f7f_amd64.deb
f. nano version.txt
Replace the version number in the version.txt file with 1.16.7.1597-a6e223f7f.
Hit ctrl+X then type Y at the prompt to commit the changes.
From the unraid docker tab restart the plex docker.

I didn’t have any problem getting it to work with my Unraid Docker.

I have the Linuxserver version as my base docker template. Go into the console for that docker and do the following:

wget <paste link to Ubuntu version of 1597 Plex>

Wait for it to download, then

dpkg -i

Restart your plex docker and you’re done.

Hm. Apparently burning subtitles into the video causes Plex to completely 100% load the CPU, even with NVENC and NVDEC in use. It does say that burning subtitles in will disable zerocopy, but it most definitely shouldn’t completely bog down the system even without zerocopy! I mean, I can just play some video from the CLI with ffmpeg without zerocopy and it won’t bog the CPU down anywhere near as much as Plex does.

Without subtitles Plex works mostly fine, I’m barely seeing 1% CPU-usage. I did stumble upon a couple of videos that won’t play, but I haven’t yet investigated what the problem is.

Anyone using a Tuner try this? after updating my tuner fails with a “failed to tune channel” message. The log files indicate a 404 error when trying to connect to the stream (I can copy/paste the URL from the log file into a browser and it opens, so it’s there). Downgrading back to the latest plex pass release fixes this.

I’m a little confused with step 4: do I just type 1.16.7.1597-a6e223f7f in when the new window pops up or do I have to do more? Also would I have to Ctrl O to save it at the end? Could you give me the exact steps and keys I need to enter? I’m very dumb when it comes to Linux console.

chrisallen’s directions are a lot more concise than mine and you should use his, but all I did was delete the text in the version.txt file, then paste the new version number in the file, press CTRL+X then Y then ENTER.

I got that error message “Failed to tune…” for the first couple of channels I clicked on in the guide then it worked okay after that and hasn’t failed since.

I’ll have to give it another shot, I tried 3 or 4 channels before I saw the 404 error in the logs and gave up at that point.
