I am trying to bid for the Dell optiplex 7010 or 7020 desktop’s to configure PMS. Could anyone suggest me if it is right idea to get one of those desktop. Recently, I have purchased 2TB WD NAS red HDD for 99$. Can I use this HDD to store PMS libraries within Optiplex desktop.
It should be fine. Depending on the size of your library, though, you may run out of space fairly quickly. What will also be a factor is how much memory is in the machine. These machines are on the older side so memory may be expensive.
The CPU is fine for moderate trans-coding use, say a couple 1080p streams, but you need to double or triple the memory. @$100 for 16GB . With your HDD storage should be okay for awhile
Thank you @grhiner Currently, I am running PMS on Mac mini (2012 core 2 duo). I want to upgrade to a better hardware for 1080p and 4k transcoding. Any recommendations for the hardware?
I’m not up on MACs so I cannot compare but the link does cover it all. I’m going to go all out in upgrading my PC soon. I use it for everything including PLEX so I’m looking at I7 8th+ Generation with 8CPUs and 16 Streams or even an I9, @32GB(+) memory and a NVIDIA video card(s) of some sort. 512 SSD and I’ll connect it to my external 15TB of storage (two MyBooks that work just fine).[edit: This is pricey at @ $2.2K, but I like to future proof]
