Are you using Ethernet or a thunderbolt to 10gbe?
Ethernet. I’m not sure I need 10GbE on it.
I did a sync test showdown between the M1 and my 3900x. The M1 synced Unhinged at Medium quality at 4.2x. The 3900x without any hardware assistance did the same movie at 10.1x. Pretty sizable delta. If you do a lot of syncing keep that in mind if you are looking to make the move.
@Balthazar2k4 and everyone else posting results, I really appreciate your thoughts on the experience! I am in the process of moving my library to the M1 Mac mini. Looking forward to seeing how it all shakes out.
Interesting. Was that a 4k file? I just did a test run on a 4k episode of GOT on a 3700X system with a 2060 Super unlocked and was getting about 1.9x into 1080 10mb.
No, that’s the regular BD version. I will do a 4K test in a bit. I have less interest in 4K transcoding due to the lack of tone mapping.
EDIT: Just did New Mutants 4K BD to medium settings. The M1 was 2,5x faster than the 3900x. That’s more like it
That’s fair, I just have a couple of family members that don’t give a crap and I don’t feel like having multiple versions on my server so I’m always curious how many 4k transcodes something can do.
It’s kinda phenomenal that a 15W chip running translated code is 40% as fast as a 140W chip.
I wonder what the architecture for the next Mac Pro will be.
Are these test files stored locally or on cloud storage? I’m looking to have a similar setup, but most of mine is cloud-based and I’m wondering how the mount would fare.
All locally stored across a wired network.
I just ordered a base model and a thunderbolt 3 to 10gbe adapter. I’ll do some testing as soon as I can. Source will be a Qnap TS-1677X with 10gbe with dual 512gb nvme I/O cache drives and a 12 drive Raid 6 pool. OS for Qnap is on a Raid 5 4x1tb Intel SSD array so it should not effect data speeds. I’m excited to retire my 3700X and P4000 if this works.
Good news for those wondering. The new tone mapping feature in the latest PMS beta works fine on the M1. I am transcoding 2 x 4K HDR streams to 1080p and the tone mapping appears correct.
Really?!?! I’m already loving my decision. The Macbook pro was so good I got an air for my wife and we are both super happy. I can’t wait to see the “Pro” Apple Silicon.
PMS is stable, reliable, fast and the new HDR tone mapping works - really enjoying the M1 Mac mini as a Plex server.
Running mine via a 10 GbE Thunderbolt adapter - it gets warmer than the Mac mini.
Looking forward to native Plex support for Apple Silicon.
Do you use sfp or rj45 adapter ?
RJ45 to my 10GbE / NBase-T switch.
I ordered M1 16GB to replace an i7 10Gbit and think to buy external adapter to continue to get 10 Gbit BW.
I saw some rumors about new option for native 10 Gbit but hope, will be available soon to replace my order and avoid to buy external & more expensive adapter than upgrade.
Do you see higher cpu consumption for large copy in 10 GbE ?
Finally picked up the Mac Mini yesterday. My 10gbe to Thunderbolt adapter has not arrived yet so my experience is just with gigabit ethernet for now. Library is 1200+ movies probably 50% 4K and maybe 800 TV episodes probably 30% 4K. All media is stored on an overpowered QNAP with 10gbe into a Unifi 10gbe switch. First install was not great, not 100% sure why just would not keep itself running. Complete uninstall and reinstall seemed to fix everything. Took about an hour or two to go through all 4 libraries (Movies, TV, Pictures and Music) and add thumbnails and looks for TV episode intros. Since then, remote viewer have been happy (they are not picky though and use wifi… yuck). Watching Avengers in 4k MKV (54gb) on a hardwired 4k Apple TV I was very happy. I tested in a few browsers and phones and things seem very, very sharp and 4k episodes of GOT start within 4-6 seconds. I’ll report more when the adapter gets here as I could see from Varys that the bandwidth was flowing very irregularly so hopefully some more bandwidth will help it feed cleaner.
Varys reporting irregular Bandwidth. Make sure it set to Full-Duplex, no Flow control
Good reminder. I just went and checked, I had everything good but forgot to set to jumbo frames. I’ll see if that makes things change.
