Plex multiple movie versions! Please acknowledge:(

Hi plex team and plex community,

I absolutely love this Plex programme! My server is awesome however there is just 1 feature I wish you’d include to make everyones server the best!

Basically for each movie I’ve got i have:

SD version
720p version
1080p version
4K version

they’re all grouped together which i love!

But what would be the Beast of A FEATURE
Pleaseeeeee have a more user friendly option to select what resolution to play and also an automatic resolution selection option due to internet speed just like netflix!!! rather than transcoding unnecessarily and clogging up the servers potential.

This would make plex the best server ever made!
I’m aware you have the option to click the 3 little dots and select a version but for those people who use my server aren’t so bright they obviously just want to get the movie played as they click on it

it would be an awesome feature to introduce!!! I believe infuse already has this feature but the app isn’t available for those who have an android device. I would love to have this feature considering I’ve paid for a lifetime plex pass.
Thus more happy customers:)

Keep up the good work.

Many thanks
-Kweeb!

Plex Server total space: 46TB with an extra separate 1TB SSD for the server transcodes/caching
Plex Server Unit: Nvidia Shield!
Internet speed: 1GBPS both download and upload speed

The selection of the “best” version to stream for a given connection and client should already be working:

If it does not, you may need to pursue that in another thread for troubleshooting.

As for the multiple versions of the same movie, that’s been requested elsewhere. This is the best I can find right now [Edit: Otto’s links for this feature below are better]:

This is a duplicate and it also asks for more than one feature

Hi mate,

thanks for sharing and directing me to the right path however does plex already do this then? because upon looking at what my shared users are watching it looks as if its transcoding when it doesn’t need to…

thanks in advance

For this you may want to open a separate thread , tagging the specific client and server you’re using. The feature already exists; if it’s not working the way you expect there may be some troubleshooting that can be performed to determine why. Logs will likely be needed. This support article describes how to configure and collect them for the server:

So, reproduce the issue, collect the logs, and report it providing as much information as possible:

  • PMS platform (Windows, Linux, Mac, etc…) and version
  • The content you were playing
  • The client you played it on
  • The version you expected it to select
  • The version is selected

Hello, i have 4K files with additional 1080p version for devices not able to use the direct play. Files are grouped in a same movies with multiple version.

When playing movies by clicking on the file without select any version, i have multiple behavior when reducing the bitrate to force a transcoding:

  • From the Apple TV 4K using the version 2.10.1 (13626), the movie start with 4K version played in Direct Play and will switch to the 1080p for the transcoding to 8 mbps

  • From Plex on Windows 10 using the version 1.4.0.924-60046db9, the movie start with 4K version played in Direct Play and will keep the 4K version for the transcoding to 8 mbps.

I’m very happy to see this behavior on the Apple TV which allow me to use the version feature and have a single Movie library using the best format without hurt my CPU.

Is there any settings to check or limitation with other client to have the same behavior ?

Thanks
