Plex Music - Song Comments & creating Smart Playlists

I haven’t had a chance to play with for music yet… I want to make sure metadata will be preserved.

1) Are comments for music allowed in Plex, as they are for Apple Music/iTunes app?
I guess on the TV side, this would be the description.

Is it possible to create a smart playlist based on something in the comments (which is what I currently do with Apple Music/iTunes)?
Currently in Apple Music/iTunes, I put a comment “free from xxxxxxx service”, and have a smart playlist that searches the comments field, and builds a playlist on the any song with the word “free” in the comments box.
2) Can we create smart playlists like this in Plex?

You can have smart playlists but there’s no “comment” field (hence it’s not supported in a smart playlist/filter). You might be able to “misuse” one of the available fields instead?!

Smart playlists currently support:

  • Artist fields
    • Artist Title (name) *
    • Artist Rating
    • Artist Genre *
    • Artist Collection *
    • Artist Country *
    • Artist Mood *
    • Artist Style *
    • Date Artist Added
  • Album fields
    • Album Title *
    • Year * (through “Originally Available”)
    • Album Genre *
    • Album Plays
    • Album Last Played
    • Album Rating *
    • Album Critic Rating
    • Album Decade * (through “Originally Available”)
    • Record Label *
    • Album Mood *
    • Album Style *
    • Album Collection *
    • Date Album Added
    • Date Album Released *
    • Album Source (Tidal vs. your own media)
    • Label *
  • Track fields
    • Track Mood *
    • Track Title *
    • Track Plays
    • Track Last Played
    • Track Skips
    • Track Last Skipped
    • Track Rating *
    • Track Last Rated

(*) fields you can edit yourself

Personally I’d go with the Label field (available on the album level) as that’s pretty much 100% in your own hands

I was just looking for information, I really like the “Artist Radio” and was looking to create some bookmarks for the ones I like. I was hoping Filter/Smart Playlist would have this, or a way to simulate it.

The field that I think is driving the Artist Radio is “Similar Artists”, looks like you can’t setup that yet. I guess I could run some type of batch to clear “Collections” and put the Similar Artists in but that seems like a step backwards for something that already has the data semi available.

From what I understand, Similar artists is an important element to it – that’s true. The field is populated through the online media sources (Musicbrainz if I remember correctly).

Is that not working for you so you need to manually recreate this behavior?

Similar Artists is not a field available for Smart Playlist.

So I have to go into my music library scroll down to the artist in my library and click the artist then click artist radio.

I would like to configure a “Smart Playlist” of Artist Radio (Simulated or a pointer to it), so I don’t have to pull up my entire music library and scroll (on a mobile device).

if already know what artist you want, you can just search for an artist, its much faster than attempting to browse.

also, unfortunately plex does not important comments in tags, or ratings in tags.

It would be very useful to be able to use with the plex android auto app for example. Perhaps if plexamp supported android auto and allowed you to start an artist playlist that would replace the need for this. However, having a playlist generated this way is currently the only way to make it easily accessible via android auto and the main plex app. It’s would still be useful to create playlists this way so you could export those playlists using any the many tools out there to Tidal. The Plex integration with Tidal is pretty good, but when using the apps in a car, Tidal playlists are much more reliable than the Plex app. The plex android auto app generally tells me “nothing available” so I have to just start it with Plexamp, but since it doesn’t support the android auto interface there’s no way to interact with it other than picking up the phone, which we’re trying to avoid
