Plex New Transcoder and qt-faststart

Since you guys during initial scanning already detect, if an MP4 file etc are optimized for streaming, I think it would be cool, if this could get embedded into the new transcoder, and when detecting a bad file,  an icon will show saying "Fix media" or siml.

What’s a “bad” file? One that needs transcoding? And how would the server know if a file is “optimized for streaming”? Wouldn’t that depend on the client?

Well, as said in the link I provided  it's an MP4 file, where Index and MetaData isn't in front of the file, thus making it impossible to fastforward etc.

The etc. threw me off. Thought this might apply to any number of containers. Why stop at detecting and notifying though? Why not have PMS fix the problem files aswell?

Well.....I don't want PMS modifying users media files without their knowledge, and as such, should be a manual process, IMHO.

Also look here for a thread with this exact issue:

I'm on the fence about this but....

I don't completely understand what you mean by this ( i cant really see your solution in my head)

during playback there to be a note on screen or when controls are overlaid that says the file should be "fixed" (optimized) so they are aware that FF and such will be not so great

or

do mean just a more obvious badge on a movie poster in the Media Manager so looking in the file info xml isn't necesary

I think most of us look under the info for the media file if it has issues playing.  The leading indicator that it might have issues playing is when you play it and notice issues.

I think he means this. When the file is analyzed by plex, it looks for known playback problems / issues that transcoder is going to have and marks the file in the webmanager with a link to recommended fixes.

That one, as well as a simple button, that will alllow the "new Plex fancy conder" to fix it

Actually I think he means he wants it displayed on clients (like the Roku) on the information screen.

Nope, cuz that could be regular users streaming, and not the PMS Admin (Owner of the media files)

Okay...trying to rephrase here:

A new media is scanned, and plex detects that it's not optimized for streaming, so instead of hiding it within some, not for regular users, XML file under the info button, instead it's in the WebAdmin interface issued with a sticker, and if the admin clicks on that, the new transcoder then could fix the problem....

End result:

Happy users, less trafic on the fora's, happy Plex, better Plex
