Plex now has commercial removal built in

I haven’t had time to watch a few recordings until now. Several lose audio sync after the first commercial cut. Has anyone else seen this? Any idea how to resolve?

Not a resolution, but a workaround… switching up clients may help playback stay more in sync. The Roku app seems to muddle through alright, whereas the Windows Store app does not fare well.

I will have to try that and report back. I was on my Apple 4K TV last night when I observed the issue. It was direct play from my server.

Thanks

Man, I just have to say that Commercial Skip is a wonderful thing when it works.

There are some recordings here and there that go completely sideways though. If I could solve for those, or if there’s a fix that could be worked on, it would be nearly perfect for me.

I don’t have my own comskip.ini configuration file, but I would like to change just one thing. Is it possible to get a copy of the default .ini file that Plex is using and then modify that?

Comskip.ini is included in the PMS install. Here’s where you can find it in Linux: /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources. Wherever the resources folder is, that’s where you’ll find it. I’ve attached the file for your convenience.

Perfect thank you! I’ve found it and made my changes…will see how it goes with my next test recording

Forgot to come back and update this. It didn’t seem to work for me. I created the DVR folder, copied in the default comskip.ini and then set “after_logo=2”, hoping that it would keep 2 seconds of the program after the logo disappeared. No joy for me, it still cuts as soon as the logo disappears.

Can I confirm that I created the DVR folder in the correct location? I have moved the location of the “local application data” folder (setting in Server/General when Show Advanced is selected) to D:\Plex\AppData. Therefore I assumed that I should create the DVR folder in "D:\Plex\AppData\Plex Media Server\DVR". Keen to know if I have this in the correct location

I’ve downloaded the normal comskip and I’ve done some testing with my settings. I’ve found that “padding=4” works nicely and pads the commercials with 4 seconds. However when I put this change into my custom comskip.ini for Plex it doesn’t seem to work. Is anyone successfully using their own custom comskip.ini and if so where did you put it? As mentioned above I have moved my AppData directory, I’ve put the DVR/comskip.ini in both locations as well.

To answer my own question I managed to get hold of the Plex comskip logs while it was running and it tells me which comskip.ini it used, it is using the one in the D : \ Plex\AppData\Plex Media Server\DVR. I can also see that it is using my settings, so I’ll continue to adjust them to see if I can get it better.

FYI my initial assumption was wrong. It does not need to re-encode the video to trim the commercials.

How accurate is the commercial skip these days? I’m just starting to record some test shows and haven’t had a chance to really see how it is doing.

In my opinion, it’s not great.

I only use commercial removal on about 10% of the shows I record. The out of the box COMSKIP.INI seems to work best on Comedy Central, so I only use the feature when recording shows on that network. By comparison, commercial removal on ABC is horrible with the out of the box COMSKIP.INI.

The problem is that it appears you need to customize the COMSKIP.INI for every channel, and at this time, PLEX does not give the user the ability to utilize different configurations on different recordings.

Advanced users have the capability to perform some post processing scripting to acheive the desired results. Users with out a decent scripting background though may be out of luck until more functionality can be added to the UI.
