Plex on Freenas plugin is completely broken 11.2U6

First I got error when playing video files, basically it was saying hardware transcoding failed. Music was working at first.

Then I restarted my plex jail, and it is now completely broken, can’t find server.

I donno what’s the risk of touching this jail now, is it possible for me to recover from this?
Also should i try uninstall pkg and then reinstall it? if so what directory should I backup so I donnot have to reconfig everything (basically i want this server to be fully restored)

Are u using the iocage based plugin or a jail u created?

Can u open a shell to the jail and validate pms is indeed running? (i.e via sockstat -l4 )

i can feel your frustration… I had the same problem. I delted the iocaged based plugin and reinstalled plex. This worked for me but I am not a pro user, so maybe there is another way to get it fixed…Since Freenas 11 the plex experience for me is no more the same as it was with the old jail system. updating it with the freenas webgui never worked for me…

I just fired up FreeNAS a few days ago. Burned many hours trying to get Emby to work. But it’s a complex thing without much assistance. I’d love to have someone help me with that.

So dumped Emby and loaded Plex. Still no joy. found that I still need to configure Jails… and there is NO step by step to do this… I have a

but that’s about it.

Some one must know how to do this… I’m using FreeNAS 11.2u5 which I see someone is having issues with… makes me wonder if that is my problem. But don’t think so, because the Jails is likely my issue. my files are in /mnt/media/media I can see them and they are owned by dhenzler:wheel so??? is that a problem…

Please help

If you have a snapshot of the jail from before the issue happened you can roll back to that. Keep in mind the FreeNAS updating system lets you reboot back to the earlier environment (11.2U5) pretty easily. It’s under System > Boot Environments. If you think this is really an issue with 11.2U6 you can just back off to where you were.

This is the Jails printout from last evening… seems like it’s created, but what do I put in Plex to make it find my media content?Screenshot%20from%202019-09-26%2022-49-02

Hmmm! Still don’t understand jails

A jail is just a virtual machine. I don’t know if it’s technically closer to a VM or a docker container. It abstracts out networking, disk and CPU. It’s a security thing, since you are effectively creating a VM that can be removed at will without bringing down the host.
For myself, between PMS updates on Freenas and AppleTV client app updates, I get extremely repeatable behavior that I haven’t figured out when it began, and I keep hoping a Freenas or Plex update will fix but it hasn’t yet: scrubbing is basically broken. If I use the remote to hop forward, more often than not, it’ll take longer to hop forward than it would have to just let it play. Even worse, if I use scrubbing to skip ads (Freenas PMS DVR doesn’t yet support ad skipping, I miss it dearly), the third time I do this, Plex will say an error occurred and force me out of the content, three times in a row. The fourth time, it’s right as rain (although it takes a long time to scrub past the ads), rinse and repeat. I’ll have to start looking at the logs, possibly rebuild the jail, not sure.

So I have fixed my plex jail, i’ve been letting it run for a couple days.

Basically I think the plex jail is having issue starting when jail start.

I have to manually run service plexmediaserver_plexpass restart to get it up and running.

I haven’t tried any other scenario but it seems to be working fine.

I saw someone said something about change in directory name in this version of plex media server plex pass. However I haven’t have time to look into it.

also… My jail is created with plugin, but I have been using pkg to update it instead of using plugin update.
also I checked my pkg it doesn’t seem like plexmediaserver_plexpass was installed? it was only plexmediaserver.
So i installed plexmediaserver_plexpass. But I’m 100% sure I chose plexpass version when I first set up in plex pass.

Anyway that’s all, I don’t know what’s actually going on, it seems like a hot mess. But thanks for whoever is maintaining the plex media server on freebsd pkg.

I’m having a similar issue with version [11.2U6]. I can’t seem to get plex to connect to my server. I’ll have to investigate it more but the plug-in and the install from jail don’t seem to work on this version.
