Plex scheduled backup task not running

Server Version#: 1.15.6.1079

Hello - my scheduled backup tasks have not been working correctly for the last month or so. I first found this out when my media DB was corrupted and I went to look for backups, only to find that they were a month old at that point. I ran the steps to attempt to fix a corrupted DB at that time but was unsuccessful so I restored from the one-month old backup and it worked.

When I restored from the last backup successfully, the backup tasks ran again for a few days and then stopped and haven’t done a backup for the last couple of weeks.

I’ve been googling the forums and saw previous advice from a Plex employee to change the start time of the DB backup and to change the backup location so that it was clear if the backups were working or not. I did this last night, checked this morning, and no backups (though since they’re only set to run once every 3 days, maybe I have to wait 2 more days to be sure it’s not working?)

Can I please get some advice on what to do next? Please let me know if logs would help, and if so, which logs to provide. Thank you!

The fix should be in the next public release, beta right now.

Thanks for the quick answer. I downloaded the beta, now running 1.15.8.1163, but the scheduled backup still did not create a file the first night it was scheduled to run. Do I have to wait up to 3 days to see if it will, or is it likely my problem has persisted to this version? Thank you.

I really didn’t know the answer to this. In my case it ran after 3 days during the maintenance window.

Keep in mind: Backup will silently fail if the target path is not accessible or not existent.
Settings - Server - Scheduled Tasks - ā€˜Show Advanced’ - ā€œBackup directoryā€

Something to verify, particularly when this path is not local
and/or Plex server is running as a system service, under a different Windows user account.

Thanks for the answer @OttoKerner . I do have a local folder selected and previous backups always worked to this directory, then they just stopped. I’m not running as a service either.

Is there something I can look for in the logs to see what problem I might be having?

Thank you.

There should be.
Make sure you have ā€˜debug’ logging enabled in the server.
Disable all the other maintenance tasks, except ā€˜Backup database every three days’
Then let it run for 3 days.
Every day after the end of the maintenance period, take a look into the Plex Media Server.log(s). Look for the time stamps covering the maintenance period.
Search for the keywords ā€˜backup’ and ā€˜database’.

Just as a brief update here, the problems persisted for me until upgrading to 1.16.1.1273. I did that yesterday, and this morning for the first time in a long time, my backups again worked. I’ll monitor for another 3 days and see if I get another file as expected then.

Hmm, I’m having the same problem, but my server says it’s up-to-date at 1.16.1.1226. I’m on a Mac, so maybe that’s the difference? Or perhaps I’m not installing betas?

(Edit: I wasn’t updating from the betas channel. I’ve updated to 1291 now, and will test again at the top of the hour, when I’ve set the scheduled task to run.)

Either way on 1.16.1.1226, the butler is not attempting backups.

I’ve verified my DB integrity, no problems.

I’ve got debugging enabled, and while the scheduled tasks are showing up in the logs, there’s no mention of ā€œbackupā€ at all.

If the DB backup is failing silently, it is usually caused by a custom backup ā€œtarget folderā€ setting, which is invalid/no longer available.

I’ve now had backups happen successfully 2 backup windows in a row, so it does appear that the newest versions have resolved the issue. Happy days.
