My question is more of a build question. So to have a little background, I want to build my own plex server instead of using my regular PC. I plan to RIP all my DVDS (using makeMKV) , of which right now are comprised of blue-rays and 4K discs. Right now I have about 123 total. Each file varies from 20G-50G depending. So storage is a must, because I plan to keep growing my collection. As far as streaming goes, all of it will be done locally so I (don’t think?) I need a CPU capable of transcoding? On average 1-4 devices streaming, and those devices are the built-in plex app on an LG TV, and Apple TV 4Ks. I do not think I need a processor capable of streaming the 4k locally, I’m honestly not sure. Right now, I have an Intel Core i5 7500 designated for the processor, just not sure if it would do for 4K, Also not sure if I need a GPU. Finally, the server will most locally be powered by unraid.
The 7xxx series has an onboard iGPU that can deal with 10bit 4k so you are off to a good start. For a server it is sized appropriately to use either software or hardware transcoding for a 1080p workload.
It is difficult to get 4K to direct play so expect a learning curve there.
Edit: Just noticed you don’t have a Plex Pass, so the Hardware Transcoding is not available to you in Plex, would be nice to have for 4K > 1080, the best recommendation would be avoid 4k
I do have Plex Pass now, I just renewed my subscription. How come 4K stream would be difficult, even with playing just within my home network? I have no intentions to open to my family and friends
The final list of devices are:
(2) Apple TV 4K
(1) Apple TV (1080p)
LG OLED (very rarely due to the Apple TVS)
WebClient (again rarely)
Without GPU support the CPU wouldn’t be capable enough to handle an audio + subtitle transcode. Most 4K steps up to lossless audio, just be sure to include the lossy track so you can switch to that for playback to direct stream.
I’m kind of new the plex thing (sort of). At least trying to do 4k content from it, so bear with me. How come Plex requires transcoding 4k content, even while direct playing within my home (via an Apple TV 4K.
