I really wanted to restart a thread about this issue. It’s been happening for YEARS now and I’ve just been working around it. I slapped together a powershell script to start it every 10 minutes just in case it stops but could someone actually fix the problem? I really don’t want to have to rebuild in Linux just in the hopes its more stable. Could you at least update the server side app so that it runs as a service? That way at least my OS could restart it automatically when it fails.
So Ive been using the windows app for years now, its about as stable as you can get. Ive seen it crash a couple times but thats 2-3 times a year.
Odds are there is something with your setup/config that is causing problems. Next time it crashes grab a copy of your server logs and post them. We can take a look at what is happening.
I’d tend to agree with you, however, there are more than a couple threads about this problem with the Plex Server app its just that Plex seems to ignore them until they close automatically. I’m using the Plex as a service app from Github but the fact that app even needs to exist speaks to a known issue Plex doesn’t seem to know how to solve. Again, this is a known issue thats existed in many versions going back years, its just amazing that Plex hasnt done anything to fix it and instead doesnt disuade people from using a 3rd party wrapper. Its kinda nuts when you think about it.
I think if a third-party app exists to accommodate some users, then they’ll spend their time on something else. From a business perspective, I get it. Since a workaround already exists, that feature gets shoved as a lower priority. Businesses don’t have infinite resources; if they spend time on developing X, they have to spend less time on developing Y.
Apps exist for niche edge cases, repeated crashes are often a symptom of something else going wrong.
