Plex Smart Collection

Server Version#: 1.32.1.6999
Player Version#: 4.100.1

Hello!

I have a question about smart collections:

If i create a “normal” collection named “test” and i go inside my library under the filter-option in the tab “collection” - the “test” collection is visibile.

If i create a smart collection named “Serien” and i go to the same tab as above - the “Serien” smart collection is not visible.

The question is now: Why is the normal collection in the filter-tab visible but smart collections are not?

Smart collections are themselves already filters. (“stored” filters, that is)
You can’t filter by a filter.

Makes sense - cant filter by a filter.

But it would be a great idea, to set a smart collection as the main screen in a library.
For example - second screenshot (where “Alle”, “Ungespielt” and “Unzugeordnet” is listed): a new entry with “Smart Collections” (so that the filtered view is the default view when i access my “Serien” (english - series).

You can’t do that anyway.

What you can do is to turn a smart collection into a hub.
But I advise you to not go overboard with this, as it can severely affect performance.

Thank you very much for that info - i will have a look at this! :slightly_smiling_face:

Smart Collections published as hubs to the Home Page work quite well for customizing the Plex experience.

I publish about 3-5 hubs per library: movies, tv shows, music. So, there are about 12-14 hubs in total. It does impact loading performance but not annoyingly. It does however help users find new media, in my experience.

I share media with two elderly users. They never go passed the home page to find something to watch, and they watch almost daily.

Other users rarely use the hubs as they are looking for something specific and/or binging on something.

Lastly, I rotate 3 of the movie hubs monthly to keep them fresh. I have 36 Smart Collections that I rotate through yearly. It would be great if Plex allowed us to schedule such a rotation automatically, but glad we have the option to do it manually.

I found a solution, that works for me - just want to share it

My goal is/was to “hide” animes for some users - i dont like it either haha but some of my users do.

First i filtered all series for exampla by their release country “japan”.

I marked all series that showed up and by editing the meta-data genre i added a custom genre named “japan”.

After that i filtered all series that are not in the genre “japan”.

I marked again all series and edited the gerne to “all series (without anime)”.

By marking the latest series i added to my plex bookmarks, i know where i stopped editing the genre for my series “japan” or “all series (without anime)”. One time a week i edit all not edited series.

Since the filters stick inside the plex player, know my mediathek only shows series that are not anime

Maybe some else needs something like this

Have a nice weekend!

I simply put all Anime in a separate library.
Access permission is granted selectively by user, quite easily too.

No danger that granny stumbles about all that Ecchi stuff…
