Hey guys, using the PIA VPN service and so far it seems great. Only
problem is that I am trying to run a plex server and cannot as it goes
through the vpn. I do not want to forward any ports through the vpn and
try to use it that way as I switch servers, ip's change, and PIA only
offer port forwarding via a couple servers. not to mention it kind of
defeats the purpose of a VPN. I want all of my traffic to go through the
VPN EXCEPT for the plex traffic. Also, this got me to thinking. Could
this be done if the VPN kill switch is enabled? Can anyone help?
Your setup & usage case aren't clear. Elaborate on a connectivity example and the layout of your network, then I can point you i the right direction.
ummm... layout of my network. I have cable modem going to my router. My PC is connected to the router. nothing special here. Plex is up and running and I have a specified port forwarded on the router and my firewalls for plex.Plex works fine this way. Now I have started using Privateinternetaccess VPN service. I sometimes connect to the calgary server and sometimes texas servers. The VPN is usualy always on. All of my internet traffic is routed through this vpn including the plex server. There is no way currently to exclude specific application or traffic from the vpn routing. With the port forwarded and the VPN turned on, plex actually does work (i assume because the port is forwarded) but the problem lies with the VPN kill switch. If I turn the VPN killswitch on, it basically disables the local internet connection (my PC cannot access the internet unless using the VPN's connection) and this somehow makes plex no longer work. So to use the VPN service AND plex, I would have to leave the kill switch disabled. I do not care to do this as this opens up possibilty of the VPN losing connection and my real IP being shared. ALSO, this is routing all of my plex traffic through the VPN which is sometimes slow when trying to access my server from my phone or tablet to stream media. I am not sure what other information I could provide. Plex let mew know specifically if you need any other info and I can provide it. There has to be some way to exclude plex from using the vpn connection but at the same time not allowing any other traffic to access my real IP if the VPN loses connection.
I’m having the same issue. Any help?

Can you please start a new thread and explain as much about your setup and what you are experiancing so that you can be helped.
Has thier been a new thread started regarding this question? if not...
I too have been reserching this isssue. I want to use PIA as well, in conjunction with Plex/Web, while maintaing the abilty to enable the "kill switch " feature. I understand that i cannot enable part forwarding on the VPN side due to shared IP's I assume? Maybe there is something that could be configured on the PIA side of things. Like if "killswitch" is triggered it only allows traffic WAN to LAN on a specific port to a designated IP(PMS, 32400), or range of IP's? I have no idea how to do this, any help would be awesome.

The point was, start your own thread, detail your own setup and requirements there - rather than highjack and old one with a "me too"
There is no "me too" when talking VPNs, every setup is essentially custom.
Outgoing Plex would be any port to any ip address
Incoming Plex would be, any ip address to whatever port you have your server published on.
